Small rock stuck between brake rotor and inner rotor shield.

We were driving around a local state park campground (1st gear, slow speed) and all of the sudden a loud squealing noise started coming from the right front of the car. Made sounds like the wear indicators on the brake pads do when they start to contact the rotor, only then there would be this rattling noise like something in the catalytic converter had come loose and was rolling around in a pipe.
I stopped and looked to see if I picked up a wire or tree branch but nothing there. Finally stopped on the side of the road and removed the right front tire. After moving the rotor fwd and backward and pushing inward on the shield a small rock fell out about the size of a pea. How that rock got in there I’ll never know. Just glad it wasn’t something worse. The whole time I was trying to figure out what was wrong I kept thinking, I haven’t read about this problem on TMS. Anyone else ever have this happen on their 05 or other car?

I had the same thing happen a few years ago with my '90 model F-150. Made an awful screeching noise! I stopped to check it and I guess the rock fell out when I backed up because the noise was gone. My mechanic buddy got a good laugh when I told him what had happened.

It must be that time of the season... I just backed my car out..and I am experiencing the same EAR shattering noise. If sounds like the car is dying!!!

I took it for a 1km boot and it is SO loud I think everyone wants to kill me.....

I'll have to figure out what wheel its coming from tomorrow and narrow it down.....

Happened to my friend 89 FORD F150. He stopped to chat with me and then started driving away. After about 10 feet this insane screaching noise started. We took the front tire off and found a very small pebbel wedged in there. What a pain.

John, is it easy to get out? (like take wheel off, poke out annoying pebble...) or does it require more than just taking the wheel off ...like messing with the brakes...

I'm hoping thats all it is, cause I'd hate to have to drive it to a dealership in this condition.... just taking it down the road drove me crazy! And since I'm in the boons....if I can get it out here...I'm all for that!

Sure enough...it was what I suspected....

Isolated by jacking up the car....front passanger...hand cranked the wheel
<SCREEEEETCH>

Took the tire off, looked behind the rotor...sure enough...a pebble

Took it out, problem solved!

Pete, and just think we learned where they hide that wimpy jack. I had no idea it was under the spare tire. Glad yours was just a pebble too!

MAN..yeah...just a pebble..and it makes it sound like its something OHHHH so horrible and destructive!

Yeah, I had to dismantle everything...
The jack...is a jack...i mean, yeah its pretty crap...but gets the job done.

HOWEVER, I would NOT want to be doing all that in the middle of a highway in the rain...(touch wood)

I had the same thing happen to me about 5 months ago. Funny thing is, I had just painted the calipers (I had removed them to do it) and the next day they started squeeling. I thought, "oh man, what did I forget to tighten?".

Took the wheel off and there it was. All you have to do is just pull the dust shield back a bit and maybe use a screwdriver to knock it out. Fixed.

Happened to me back in December while driving down a dirt road. Scared the poop out of me until I figured out what it was.
