The mechanics involved in this problem is a buildup of vapor pressure that the nozzle can detect. The solution is either to insert the nozzle in further or pull it out a bit. This may allow a more direct flow of the gasoline and less vapor pressure. Upside-down or not, the only thing that matters is how far the nozzle is in the tank. I have never had this problem, nor had I heard of it.

 

Well time for my 2 cents. As most of you already know I live in Canada. I now have close to 2500 miles on my car. I have never, ever had a problem putting gas in my car until I went to the states last week. I had to make 2 stops at gas stations and both of them did the same thing. I could barely fill the tank with gas. It kept spurting out a bit so I would have to pump it real slow. I pulled it out a bit and it would still "spurt". So that being said, to summarize, no issues for me in Canada and nothing but issues in the states.

 

This is issue is partly due to the saddle fuel tank design and variability in fuel pump nozzle designs. Do a search on the Nissan 350z or BMW 3 series fueling problems and you will see that they have the same issue. Some gas stations pump at very low flow rates. The head pressure is insufficient to get the fuel over the saddle thus causing intermitent spit back.

Turning the nozzle upside down just gets the shut off valve which is located at the bottom of the fuel nozzle (take a look at the little hole there the next time you pump) above the fuel level thus preventing the shut off.

 

Fueling IS a problem and Ford is aware of the problem. I take issue with people that think we are so stupid that we can't fill a tank. Some of the people instructing do not live in areas requireing vapor recovery nozzles or even own an 05 Mustang.
Fueling the GT is about the only thing I do not like about the car. Burning it is fun!!!

 

Thanks Mongoose, I agree... I notice too that being a woman I get even more of the attitude that I have no clue.

For those telling me that all I have to do is pull out the nozzle a bit... WRONG. Out of the 3 times I have filled the tank, I have had trouble twice. Different stations, pulling the nozzle out, pushing it in, whatever.

Today, was the worst. I had the nozzle upside down, and it STILL did it, just not as bad, until I got to the last gallon or so. Then it was a real chore. Even then, when I got in, I didnt have a full tank. With gas prices the way they are, and the way this V8 burns gas, I hope they fix this soon, because now its getting annoying. I drive a lot, and its bad enough having to fill up every other day.

Ditto... I think this problem is more pump related... certin pumps seem to be more problematic(sp?) than other

Weird Peter, ARAL gives me trouble, but most Esso stations are fine!??? I had to use the upside-down nozzle trick tonight, and no, this has never happened this severely with any other car. When the weather gets cold, this could be quite a PITA.

I actually popped $10 worth in her today without incident. Last time I was there, I thought I'd shoot myself trying to get it in there. There actually seems to be a difference by actual nozzle. I always use the same station, but yet nozzle by nozzle, there seems to be different characteristics. I've spotted 2 pumps now where no problems occur. I'll be using those specfic locations now.

I may be in Sunny SoCal, but the temps are getting into the mid to high 30s around here... in fact, it was chaos yesterday because for the first time in about 5 weeks it didnt RAIN all weekend. Living at the beach everyone comes out of thier cocoons when that happens.

Static is REALLY bad here, and I always have a problem with it. Even during the summer. Because of that, I got into the habit as a kid of touching the door of the car as I get out. In fact, I will touch any metal near me whenever I get a chance, otherwise I have been known to short out printers at work, or cell phones, or other electrical devices I get to before grounding. My mom told me about the gas fires when I first started driving.

 

FWIW, out of 50+ vehicles I've owned, I've only had this issue a handful of times. Never had the problem with any of my Stangs though.

I understand that it is not a major issue, like the drivetrain noises are, but it is still annoying. I have only filled up an 05 GT ONCE, and yet I still had that problem, or, rather, my ride-along salesman did. So, for those that say it is the pumps, that may be some part of the problem, but there is some issue with the gas tank design, because I've filled up my Explorer many times at that same gas station and never had a problem.

 

I have the same problem with my 05 GT.

You gotta pump real slow.

It's a design flaw that's for sure and Ford should fix it.
