Had My First Problem
Went to fill up my tank for the second time yesterday. Since I didnt have any trouble the first time, I put the nozzle in the tank, latched it, and went to wipe fingerprints off my door. Didnt even get turned away when I heard the nozzle click off. Tried a couple times to get it to fill, and alas, wouldnt. BUT, I remembered reading here people having trouble, and how to fix it. I turned the nozzle upside down, and VOILA! no trouble filling it. Slightly annoying, because I cant do anything while waiting for the tank, but, eh, no biggie.
Thank you to all the folks posting about their problems, and how they are resolving them...

Actually, BamBam, I tried that. Again, from READING the other posts here, and having read how SEVERAL other 05 owners had this problem, they suggested turning the nozzle upside down. It worked.

Just pull the nozzle out a bit.

NO EXCUSES!
Yeh, Silverbull, I am HAPPY that this is a minor issue, easy to deal with. I have already notified my dealer about the issue, and will be taking it to them next week to have them look into it, and hopefully fix it. Until then, its not something that I am actually going to get pissed about.
I frankly have much more important things to expend that amount of emotional energy on.

It's more dependant on the service station. My car (listed over there <----) has issues with certain stations that have very high pressure on their pumps ... I have to pull it over halfway out of the tank to get it to fill without cutting off. The stations I usually use have less pressure, and it fills fine.
Don't blame the car yet. Try another station, another brand ... if you usually go to BP, go to Shell and see how that does. Different pumps may not have that problem.

Well I think it's actually kinda Funny! I used to have the same thing to fill up my Mom's Yellow 73 Mach 1. Even though the Gas cap was on the back, not the side, it's almost like another Mustang tradition, to have to turn the Gas Nozzel Upside Down.
SixtySix, nope never had this issue with any other car...
Matic, I will defintely check it out at different stations. First station was a Mobil, yesterday, Chevron. I will go back to the Mobil next time and see. The Mobil is more convenient anyway, so wont bug me if that one doesnt give me any trouble.

So if I am right, the pressure of the pumps can't overcome the increase in air pressure that the incoming gas causes to happen in the empty tank. This results in the nozzle shutoff, yeah? And it would follow that it's different results at different locales.
The solution of turning the nozzle upside down is interesting. I would wonder the reason. Gravity assist in keeping the cutoff at bay? Hmm...
Another solution is to not pump a full speed, but 70 percent fill rate. What's 20 seconds more to pump? Also, after about 7-10 gallons, you can then usually go full speed until full. Dunno why. And no funny lookin' upside down nozzle fills!
Try filling up a '65 Ranchero. You dang near have to use the Force with today's pumps...

...somtimes if you dont push the nozzle in all the way it helps.

Oh man. Good stuff.
I lived in an age long ago, when someone used to pump gas for folks who drove into a gas station. I used to be one of those people who pumped gas, we called ourselves, "petroleum transfer engineers". Having to twist and turn the gas nozzle is nothing new. A high percentage of cars would not accept the gas nozzle in the so called normal filling position. I agree with JessicaRabbit, this item is not a big deal, there are bigger things in life to worry about.
The people complaining make it sound like its the first time they've ever heard of this problem.....
....
Guys its not a mustang related issue only. LOTS of cars do this.
How do you think we know how to solve it?
I've had this happen on 2 other cars. 1 pontiac and one chevy.
Its not like the problem doesn't allow you to fill up.
Either yank out the nozzle an inch or do the upside down trick.
