I took delivery of my GT last week. The pre-delivery test drive went extremely well (with thanks to Zig-Zag for the 6 page check list) except for one minor detail. As I was driving the car back onto the dealer lot, there was a distinct "click-click-click" sound eminating from the rear end of the car at speeds of 5-10MPH. Above or below those speeds, no sound at all. I took delivery anyway with the dealer agreeing to fix the problem. After all, it was a GT on x-plan and everything else checked out real fine; I didn't want to give it up because of that minor issue. You know the dealer could sell the car at MSRP or better within a few days.

I thought this was the limited slip differential TSB issue and gave the details and TSB number to the service writer. It's amazing how some of us know more about these cars than the guys writing them up do!

The dealer agreed to have it checked out and the service manager was great about getting the car in this week to have it looked at. So, yesterday I dropped it off. They reactivated the Global Window feature (works great now) and the drive-line master mechanic has ordered an entirely new differential assembly for the car. Apparently, there have been some issues with pinion gears being of poor quality causing this defect. This is not a case of the LSD TSB but one of a defective part being used at the factory or in the manufacturing process of the axle. Anyway, it's too bad there's a problem with the car before I even took it home but I'm very happy with how they handled this. The parts should be in next week...I'll let y'all know how it turns out. Has anyone else had this issue...?

I had the same issue...the dealer said there was water in my differential. They replaced the gears also. I only had about 2,500 miles on the car...but at least it was warranty.

I've heard this same sound just recently. I was gonna wait until my next oil change to get it checked out, but maybe I'll bring it in sooner now.

I noticed a "clicking" too. In reverse going uphill into my driveway travelling I'd say 5 mph or less and I heard a "click click click" sound. I couldn't tell where it was coming from as it's so low that I only can hear it when I apply very light pressure to the accelerator.. any engine noise drowns it out. Weird. I'll mention it at my first service.

Other than that, 750 miles and all's good!

Got this fixed last week. The problem was "carrier out of warp and bad ring/pinion. Installed new differential/axle." I'm glad they replaced the entire assembly rather than taking the pumpkin apart and replacing individual pieces. The only issue I had with this exercise was the tech reinstalling some of the parts incorrectly. Here's the link to that episode as posted in the Tech Forum:

New Differential Installation

Wow! What you went through.. sheesh! I'm glad they finally got it right. How's your car since? Have you located a new shop? The tech that did that installation doesn't sound like an 'A' tech, more like a 'C'.

I expected something like this for a first-year run vehicle...the car has been absolutely GREAT since this episode.

I had the clicking sound and lots of gear noise. Dealer installed a new differential and it's much better. However, has a bad howl on coast at 45 mph. Going to take it back again. For the money charged it should be quiet.

I've owned more than a dozen cars and only one other had any significant noise and that was much quieter than my '05 GT.

If you're going to replace the gears, I'd recommend you ask them to install Ford Racing 4:10's. They really liven up the car off the line and add only about 350 RPM while cruising at highway speed. These cars are really quick off the line with 4:10's, and a Predator tune.
