Use to have the same problem i cleaned the throttle body and disconnected the pcv line and put a breather, all that sludge on the throttle body is caused by the oil vapors coming from the pcv line to the back of the throttle plates and the 4.6 are real bad bout that problem, ever since i done that never had any kind of gunk on the throttle body

 

so i went ahead and cleaned my throttle body today. i have an '05 GT that just passed the 90K mark 2 days ago, so i thought i should take a look. i'm glad i did - it was extremely dirty and it was caked on too.

so the whole process maybe took a half hour, and that was to go inside and grab a bottle of water and take a 5 minute break. just taking it up onto the highway it seems to rev a little smoother and not have any hesitation.

i am seeing the issue everyone else spoke of with the rpm's not coming down immediately between shifts, only mine is low in comparison to theirs. it only hangs around 1250-1500 rpms very shortly and comes back down. i'm debating on waiting to see if it will self-correct after a few days or if i have to unplug the battery to retrain it. all in all, i think it's worthwhile doing this.

Yes, unplug that battery.

Normally, I do that first, THEN remove the TB, clean it, put it back, then battery back on, go drive for 10 miles in mixed speeds. Tada. Instant improvement.

However, it will retrain after a week or so. Just have to flush out the old data and eventually it'll be all figured out.

 

Yea I unplugged it last night because its so easy to do haha. All fixed!

 

Do you guys think that the Charge Motion Plates would also get covered with crud? Just a thought.

 

I believe there is an old thread that shows pictures of some that were removed and replaced with the delete plates , and yes they showed quite a bit of it ...

 

Well after listening to you all talk about it, I decided I would go check, and clean mine. Only took me about 30 min. from start to finish, and boy was there a difference. I got the car used, and it has always had a lag in the throttle. I just assumed it was the throttle by wire system causing it all, but I was wrong. After cleaning it I had much more throttle control. This allowed me to hang the rear end out more when having fun.

Anyways, see the before and after pictures below. BTW car has 55,000 miles on it.

I did and had no trouble.

 

I have to do this around every 10,000 km. If not she starts to lag. I have a feeling mine is like this due to the WMS intake. However I just put a new tune in it, perhaps that will change things a bit.

See in my gt when I hit the gas there's some sort of delay before the rev goes up. Hope this is what caused it, but well once I clean mine..

 

I have some CRC carburetor cleaner in my garage. Will that be okay or should get CRC throttle body cleaner?

Guys, what's the worst thing that can happen when you try fixing the throttle body?

 

I don't know...... Over tightening the bolts when putting the throttle body back on would probably suck. It would also probably suck if you broke any of the plastic connectors on the wiring harness.

 

When cleaning the TB don't force the plates open as they are gear driven by electronics and damage may occur. Just push them to slightly open in order to get a brush {I use what's called an acid brush} and work the TB cleaner into the tight area, then rinse. Don't clean the sealing o-ring with sprays as some seal ring materials may swell from it. When reinstalling the TB cross-tighten the nuts evenly. Don't crank one down tight then the next and so on. It's bad practice and may crack flanges. Make sure all air intake hoses are reinstalled correctly and Mass Airflow connector reinstalled or engine codes may appear.
