I honestly don't really understand the whole lot lizard thing. I've always purchased cars off the lot with 1 exception. They've all suited me just fine. I mean if you are so totally set on having EXACTLY what you want and are willing to pay more and wait longer, sure. Go for the order. My feeling is once I've made up my mind to go for this, and I can find what suits me on the lot AND make a deal if possible because the dealer wants to move inventory...then go for it.
