Maybe the shift rods arent lubed well . A ranger I had was stubborn, but some grease and it was ok.

Yes, I've been noticing mine is starting to have that symptom last several hundred or so Km. Everything was slippery smooth at first. Just rolled over 2000 Km (thats 1,242 mi)

Does it happen when in cold temperatures? I've noticed the t-5 in my Mustang sometimes is harder to shift on very cold mornings but gets better as the car warms up.
Another thing to check is to make sure the clutch cable is adjusted properly so that the clutch disengages fully when you push down the pedal. The cable might have stretched a bit... On the SN-95s this was done by lifting up on the clutch pedal.... might still be the same on the 05s?

Robert, don't you have anything more helpful to add but just add snide comments when someone has a question about something that might be problem?

Had a '94 V-6 with a similar problem, except it was 1st and
reverse that it didn't like to go in. Turned out to be the clutch.

I know on my wifes F-150, it won't let you downshift into first if you are going too fast, not sure if that is the case or not.

When you say downshifting, I'm assuming you were moving when you tried this?

I have to muscle in the first gear downshifts at anything above a crawl....she doesn't seem to take them very well at speed (read: anything above 5mph). Sounds like some of the mags have had this problem as well.

a decent pre-downshift blip of the throttle solves the problem though....

BTW, pulling up on the clutch pedal might adjust something, but NOT the cable, its a hydrualic clutch!!!

Even with synchros, you really don't want to go into first without being at a dead stop. You'll wear out the synchros very fast if you are trying to go into first too early.

The cars are using the tr-3650s and we already know that they are not smooth trannies.

Yea I thought this was pretty much normal for manuals. Everyone that I have driven will not let me downshift into 1st while moving. Of course I have only driven 4 banger manual so they may be different. I can downshift into 2nd quite easily unless I'm going at a high rate of speed
