This is a new one to me... I was sittin in the drive thru (perhaps my brefast story you read today?) and I typically shut off the engine and have key in off whilst I wait.

Well, I was sittin there, just turned off the car... and heard this... buzzy-clacky-groany-mechanical-whirry type noise. (hard to describe, y'know?) I'd heard it before shutting down the engine, and thought it odd... but it's still going now... weird.

I'm thinkin' it sounds like something shorting out, but I didn't know where it was... but it seemed to be coming from the dash.

So I'm leaning in... and it stops. Hm. Turn key back on, NOT starting engine... and the sound starts up again.

where is it... where?!?... dang it, it stopped again...

So... after many on/off sequences... I figured it out. It directly corresponds to the center gauges (fuel, battery, oil, water) moving about. When they stop, it stops. When they move, the sound is there.

What I apparently was hearing was one of the needles 'jumping' about a little... probably voltage, although I wouldn't actually know. I'm guessing the needles are connected to little servo motors?

Am I the only one here who's heard this? Is there a fix? Is there nothing that can be done except marvel at my amazing ears and ignore it otherwise?

Mine does the same. Not sure why, but I suspect all Mustangs of this style do this.

 

I think it's also temperature dependent... it stopped at some point during the day, haven't heard it since this morning. It was mid to high 50s overnight, so...

 

Mine does it too. Sounds like one of those wind up walking toys.

It looks like the gauges are spooling down when you shut off the key.

 

Spooling down, spooling up, jostling for position...

/just reportin'.

 

I've noticed this alot when somebody brought it awhile ago. I figure it's the car letting me know it's still alive. No problems yet.

 

Like said, it's the guages winding down, ie- watch the fuel guage and the sound will stop when it hits "E".

 

mine does it aswell. It sounds kinda like a old school film projectorto me.

 

What I think is funny is how I have temp and oil pressure when I turn the ignition on but before I start it. And yes I hear the wind down.
