Gas Guzzler Tax on '05 ?
can anyone confirm rumor? ...I was speaking with a Pontiac salesman re: GTO A/T (which has a $1,000 gas guzzler tax- just A/T, not 6spd) and he stated new Mustang will also be hit by Feds!, possibly quite higher than $1,000 !!
Here's the problem:
"...I was speaking with a Pontiac salesman..."
He would tell you that Mustang will give you genital herpes and **** the garage floor every night if he thought it would get you to buy a GTO.
In short, there's no way in firey heck Ford would put a powerplant in a car as mainstream as the GT that would leave it with a gas guzzler tax.

???. What? It looks like it'll be getting better gas milage then a Mach 1, and the Mach *doesn't* have a gas guzzler tax. (Cobra's do, however).
I'm sure he was just trying to steer you away from the Mustang and into a GTO. Even if it did have a gas Guzzler tax, it'd still be 7K cheaper then a GTO.

i don't think the gt will be hit with the ggt, due in part, to the throttle linkage being electronic (drive by wire) rather than mechanical...on the down side, there have been reports of dare i say it (shades of audi back in the mid 80's) unintended acceleration due to the incorporation of the throttle control into pcm...all due of course to the ever tightening of the emmission laws. from what i've heard, some of the auto makers have done a better job of integrating the drivebywire into the operation of the vehicle over other makers...jackg 90seville 94k...an original owner of a 70 mach one (dating myself)
The Energy Tax Act of 1978 established a Gas Guzzler Tax on the sale of new model year vehicles whose fuel economy fails to meet certain statutory levels. The gas guzzler tax applies only to cars (not trucks) and is collected by the IRS. The purpose of the Gas Guzzler Tax is to discourage the production and purchase of fuel inefficient vehicles. The amount of any applicable Gas Guzzler Tax paid by the manufacturer will be disclosed on the automobile's fuel economy label (the window sticker on new cars).
There is no reason why gas guzzler tax on mustang would be more than GTO. The mustang should do alot better on gas I would think it is a lighter car. My 97 Cobra was listed on the sticker getting better mileage than my 97 GT I traded for it.

You don't actually think that a Pontiac salesman would say anything complementary about the new Mustang do you. He's trying to sell you one of those POS GTO's. There was an article in Det news how GTO sales so far have been LESS than half of what GM was hoping for. Pontiac is DESPERATE. The GTO is tanking!
Most Ford dealer sales people don't have a clue what is going on with the 2005 Mustang. How the heck would a Pontiac salesman know anything. (Unless they read The Mustang Source.com)
Believe me, there is NO way in the world that Ford would produce a high volume car like the Mustang that would be subject to the gas guzzler tax!
The GTO is a Holden Monaro, an Aussie car with Aussie pollution controls...the Mustang is subject to American (and specifically Californian) enviro-saving laws...
I'm not sure what they do down under, but telling by the kind of cars available in Aus, pollution control is not a top priority.
And, if you are reading this, look up at nichole's post for the real story...

The GTO even WITH skipshift has a GasGuz tax.
Mind you so does the Cobra with a shift light.
Speaking of which...have we confirmed that the GT will have a shift light? its on the gauge cluster that we've seen....hope to god we can disable it in the InfoCenter

No electrical tape on MY car
Shift lights can be annoying, and I'd hope it was optional. It'd kinda cool if it were programmable.
And, I'm not sure what's wrong with electrical tape. I use it for the blacked out headlight look.

I get to call BS on that one. I have a 6 speed GTO, I did not pay a gas guzzler tax. Its rated at 29 for the highway and 17 city, the automatic is a 4 speed auto, 21 highway, 16 city. I believe they have to meet a 22.5 highway average to not meet the tax. There is a link below to the IRS form that shows how to compute the tax. Thats why the 6 speed doesn't pay the tax (barely). If you take the numbers off the Ford web site, the current GT gets 25 on the highway, and I would imagine that the new Mustang will get similar numbers, although I don't know if the average will go up for 05.
Also, the Monaro doesn't have Aussie pollution controls. The motors are built in Canada and have the same emission controls they have here. And even if they didn't, they would have to meet the US standards, not the Australian standards.

. They managed to bump the EPA rating up one or two MPG, which was enough...
