Not sure if anyone mentioned this workaround already, but I have had the fuel tank filling issue since the car was new. I tried different pumps at different stations, and at full pump pressure, the pump would always shut off a bunch of times before the tank was really full. Pumping at half speed or so would help, but then it takes twice as long to fill. B)

Anyway, the workaround is quite easy, and I've done it successfully the last three fillups. I put the nozzle all the way in the filler neck, and then just pull it out maybe a half inch or so. The rubber environmental thingy that prevents fumes from escaping is still in place, but the nozzle isn't shoved all the way into the filler hole. It works like it should when I do this - can pump the gas at full speed and it shuts off properly when the tank is full.

Anyone else tried this?

Got the tank fixed though... no problems since.

I think everything has been tried since so many people have had this problem. People have tried what you suggest and it worked at some pumps but not all. Other tried holding the pump handle upside down with some luck, but again, not always. Before getting my tank replaced I found only 1 pump where it would not fill properly.

I used to hold the nozzle up-side down and it would then work fine. Got tank replaced and now always works the right way. Just get the tank replaced and you will be much happier. Besides it's free. And if it's free, it's me!

 

I haven't had any TSBs done on my car. The main reason is I don't trust any of the dealer monkeys that are around here to do so. The last thing I'm getting involved in is taking the car back 20x just to get things right. Been there, done that, got the T-shirt, sold it on ebay. I've been pretty successful at filling the tank without incident.

 

I just hold the pump unside down.... funny though you get more change that way from the people hanging from the roof.....

seriously I just hold the pump upside down everytime regardless just kind of like a habit now.

 

I just get the car fixed and have it work the way it should from the start. If it takes 20x so be it. They pay for the rental, not me

 

They must have fixed the problem for 2006. I have not had one problem at all...

 

My 05 was built 1/12/05, and I have never had a problem filling up. Any station, any weather, any time of day or night. Thankfully.

No Shaker problems (but for the occasional incident when I do something to confuse it; Tony / SixtySix had the fix for me---turn it off, turn it back on as in rebooting a computer--works like a charm). Only TSB work done was the upper front strut mount bearings. Approqaching 5k miles and loving the car more and more by the mile.

 

wow crap man I ordered mine on 12/4/04 took delivery on 3/25 and have 8,000 miles on her.

No issues, really except the first gear bucking and the inverted gas pumping required.

 

I think someone has already said this in another post, but the older gas pumps seem to do better with these fuel tanks. At least that's the case with mine.
