Fuel Gauge Problem
I found an older thread with this problem 'dte fli data err' displays in the message center and the gauge drops to 'E' -- but no resolution was posted. Anyone know what this problem is and how to correct?
My car had the Fuel tank tsb performed about 4 months ago. I also checked the fuel cap and it is correctly attached. I also refueled the tank and made sure the cap was properly attached, just to be sure.
I checked trouble codes with my predator and there were 2:
1) Fuel sensor error
2) Failed obd readiness test

Just had that fixed on my car. It started on a Wednesday and only happened 2 or 3 times before I took it to the dealership the following Monday. I also thought my gas cap may of caused the problem as I had that issue with my Ranger. Anyways they had to replace the sending unit, and maybe fuel pump. They checked the car out on a Monday, ordered parts and let me take it home. The parts came in Tuesday and I returned it Wednesday and it was done by that afternoon. I haven't had the gas tank TSB done, and had forgotten about it until I read this post, but I haven't really had too much difficulty filling my tank. It does happen on occasion though. I wonder if it venting improperly has anything to do with this? Anyways it was covered under warranty.
I had the error display with the needle shooting to E also. Had it serviced on Nov. 8. The problem started a couple days before, then all I got was the check engine light on without the error display etc. All they did was reset the system & give it a gas additive. Gave me an extra bottle to put in after my next fill up. Thought it was poor quaility gas cause the service seemed to work & I avoided that gas station from here on. But 800 miles & a few fill ups later it appeared again. Going to have the car really checked out at the dealer now on Wednesday 11/30. Dealer said as long as it drives good & sounds good, which it does, it's okay to drive with the Service Engine light on until they really fix it. But who knows if something else trully goes wrong & that's what the light is signalling so I don't want to wait too long for service. :bang:
Any updates Jim, my car just started having this problem (only 2200 miles on her). I was freaked out today when I got in my car and saw I had no gas (the computer said 25 miles to E). So I figured some punk too some of my gas and I looked outside my car and didn't see any spill so I just happy he didn't spill it on my car. I get to the gas station and when it goes to fill up it took 10 gallons, which matched the cars display of gallons used since last reset.
I'm hoping this is just a one time problem since I don't want to take her in.

I picked up the mustang yesterday afternoon. Rather than replace the fuel sensors which the dealer has done twice the tech decided to clean them( remove sulphur deposits) after consulting the Ford Tech in the USA. FOR USA is telling the dealership to use gasoline from high end gas stations such as ESSO, Chevron and Petro Canada. Apparently these gas outlets do not have sulphur mixed in with their gas products. I was also told I should avoid supper market gas, convenience store gas, Billy Bob's Nevada Gas etc. So much for the theory that these new mustangs run on plain 87 octane.
I was also told I should put Chevron Techron Fuel Treatment in my gas tank every four fills. I don't have a problem doing this if it avoids the DTI Date Fuel Error message. The only problem I have with it is that Ford obviously is not going to pay for the treatments. For an additional laugh Health Canada will not allow Chevron to sell the product to the public in Canada as it does not like Chevron's labeling.

I started getting this error code the *day* I filled up with Super Market Gas from Safeway. :bang:
Do I have to take the Mustang to the shop? Just fill up from Shell from now on? Buy a fuel Additive? If so what kind would work that I can buy in Canada?
Any advice is much appreciated.

I got the error message that my gas tank was empty - but it was actually 3/4 full. I brought it to the dealer today, they could not find an error message and advised me to add chevron techron additive for the fuel tank for 2 fill-ups, feel it was poor quality gas?! Too soon to tell if the problem comes back as it appeared only one time and has not done it again.

I still have been reading correctly on my Fuel Gauge ever since assuring that I leave the key switched off during refueling. Only one time did I ever read less than full, and it was only for about 15 miles and three re-start cycles, when the system corrected itself. I suspect that my problem was caused by a real-time stack error by turning the ignition to the on position during the refueling cycle. I think the poor computer couldn’t handle it.
I exclusively burn Shell, Chevron, or Union 76, and always the Premium Grade of fuel. I understand that Premium grades have more of the cleaner additives in them. Have you heard this too? In addition, if you were to run exclusively Chevron with Techron, is that a sufficient quantity of the cleaner to keep the optical sensors clear, or are they still saying to add more Techron? Finally, any sulfur in the fuel would give off SO2 (rotten egg or Sulfuric Acid) smell. Has anyone noticed that with the grocery-store brands of fuel?
Thanks, Brian.
My car is fixed. Initially, I was annoyed with my dealer because they said Ford would not authorize a repair. Sulphur in the gas was the explanation. They instructed me to use (2) tankfulls of good quality fuel along with the Chevron Techron additive mentioned above in this thread. If the problem persists bring it back in. So I bought the additive ($10 /bottle) and tried it for two tankfulls .. And it worked!!
Only now I have to pay .20/gallon higher for major brand gas.
One other interesting tidbit from all this .. they tell me high sulphur content is characteristic of gas refined from imported oil from Venezualea.

Does it still work? I have this problem and put some in tonight...

Since I started using the Chevron Techron on December 17th I have not had anymore problems. The key is to put the whole bottle of Techron in the gas tank when the tank is almost empty and then fill up the gas tank. It should be good for 5000 miles. A bottle cost $11.50 in Canada, I am sure its cheaper in the USA.

Well, as per suggestion from you I put in a bottle last night in an almost empty tank. I drove all day today with no touble yet. I guess I need to cross my fingers for the next few days! I

Mine suddenly started doing this for severl days a month or two ago.
My dealership told me this error is the result of sulfur or other contaminate buildup in/on the fuel sender unit sensors, they put a bottle of some fuel system clean in and recommended I visit a Chevron for my next fillup because of Chevrons Techron fuel cleaner additive. The problem occured twice more before my next fillup but with less regularity, as instructed my next fillup was at a Chevron after my next fillup the problem has not returned.

Hmm... I used the Techron on my last fillup and have found that at least at this time it happens just as much as before. In addition, I ALWAYS use Chevron fuel...
I can put another one in, but at $10 a shot, it's expensive to do over the long run...
My dealership is a large one and just shakes their heads - the manager hasn't heard of this problem?? And we have TONS of Mustangs on the lot!
