I'm sure most of you old-timers can relate to repacking the front wheel bearings.

Thank you very much.
I had no idea. I just assumed it was the usual roller bearings.

They have been using these on Mustangs since 94 when they came standard with 5 lugs.

The same type is used on the Ford Contour and has the tendency to fail early in those vehicles when driven hard. I'm not suprised that a Mustang could have the same failure when driven on a road course.

Meh... I'm sure it happens, but is insignficant in the greater scheme of things (or else there would have been a recall or TSB on the matter). For what its worth, I have a BMW front hub that uses the same setup as a paperweight on my desk.

Ah, my last Mustang before my 06 was a 70, a bit behind the times I guess.
And the 60's & 70's were standard with 5 lugs then as well.

Yeah, me too.
The last one I pulled apart was a '65 Mustang with 5 lugs and front drum brakes.

hmm, my dad used to have a couple 60's mustangs. Maybe he can help me replace and repack them. I've been thinking of doing it anyway at 100k.

They are sealed hubs. Now you can have the bearings pressed out, but is cheaper just to buy a new hub. I dont know the price of the 05-09 mustangs, but the older ones ran around 45 bucks.

Ford has been using this design on just about all their cars and trucks for a while now. I see no issue with it.

Like anything when it comes to pushing it in a race environment the factory parts simply do not hold up which is why most racers end up building there own stuff.

Looking at the failure showned in this thread, can this be the cause of some vibrations very often reported by people putting wider tires ?

It'd be nice if we could repack the bearings with synthetic grease, or at least have the manufacturer use quality synthetic grease.
