Front Seat Side-Mounted Air Bags
#22
My kids age 12-15 will be passengers and eventually drivers of my V6 Premium. That is why I will get a 200 hp V6 rather than a 300 hp V8 and order all safety features including side airbags.

I'm getting the side airbags. A few years back one of my co-workers died in a side impact collision travelling at 30 mph, as a result of his head slamming into the driver's side window. The side airbags are designed to protect occupants in these situations. I'll take the side impact airbags over the $ towards aftermarket wheels any day. Fortunately side impact air bags will be manadatory on all vehicles within a few years.

I called USAA, my insurance company and they told me that they were not sure if I would get an "additional" discount for side impact air bags, since they could not pull up that as an option on the car yet. I am already getting a discount for front impact air bags, so I doubt I will get one for the side impact airbags.

I've wasted a lot more money on much more useless items, its not a ? for us. Their on my Envoy now and had them on the LS. Better safe now then sorry later. Like any mishap insurance, beter to have and never use, then need and not have.

370 bucks is cheap for side air bags!! Remember what they used to cost on new cars?!? (I don't either, but it was a lot). Definitely well worth the money. It COULD save your life or the life of a friend or loved one.
Mine is already ordered with side air bags! I would recommend the same to anyone. If not for you, then for your passengers. B)

Go for the side air bags - my GT premium that I ordered will have them. I only wish that FORD also had the side curtain system in this car that is available in the FREESTAR. My other ride is an Audi and it has 6 bags. More protection is better and I'm surprised that most folks don't order the extra bags.
GO FOR IT!

I think the fact that they will become standard in a couple of years says something about their value.

What are people's interest in paying the extra $329 (Invoice) to $370 (MSRP) for this option?
I for one am taking that $330 and getting me the 17" Bright Machined Wheels and the Interior Color Accent Package for, yep you guessed it, $330. At least I will be able to see/enjoy the money I spent. B)
The likely hood of you getting hit in the side of your car, let alone hard enough to "need" air bag protection is so small. If you get T-boned at 60 MPH, the Air Bags won’t help you much anyway.
Is there a discount your auto insurance company is going to give you if you opt for this? Probably not. They are already going to be giving you a discount for the standard front impact air bags. <_<
Also, your car is going to weigh that much more.

So what gives?

Sorry, that's what I meant...... standard because of regulation.

If I had to chose between air bags for $370 dollars or the UIP and wheels ....its would be the air bags for sure .My family and friends are worth more than $370 dollars worth of wheels ....I can buy the wheels later or go aftermarket later but my friends and family I cannot replace .I know myself I am A good driver but you can't count on the next driver coming your way .The car can be replaced ...family and friends can't.

My preference is to have all the interior protection you can get.....If I had a side impact and hadn't paid for the airbags, I would really rue the day I wasted my $370 on wheels (which are now worthless anyway). $370 or permanent disability.....that's a no-brainer for me.
Also, the side air bags also protect in a head on collision. If the collision is at an offset (see very basic picture ), the cars spin, therfore, the airbags stop you smashing your shoulder on the pillars. My 2c worth...

What I'm wondering is if the airbags will deploy in ALL accidents or only the side impacts?

Whether they save you 300 a year or NOTHING, still get them, I hope you value yourself more than that.
