flowmasters rattlin'
flowmasters rattlin'
ive had my flowmasters on there for about a year and recently the left one is rattling like crazy. its usually when either downshifting or accelerating around 1700rpm. i got under there and repositioned the loose clamp and tightened it until i couldnt go anymore. it fixed the problem for a day or 2 but now the annoyance is back. anyone else have this problem with those HORRIFIC clamps? im just thinking about getting them welded on so ill never have this problem ever again but then its a definete commitment to the mufflers.
I don't think it's your clamp. Mine started doing this just recently as well. Nothing was loose that I could see. Everything seemed tight. I did a search on here and discovered that the baffles are coming loose inside the mufflers. I guess the welds are breaking inside. If you do a search you will find many have had this problem. I'm in the process of trying to get mine replaced. I've read that Flowmaster has been good about shipping out another set to customers. The new ones aren't suppose to do this, but I've read several threads/posts where someone got replacements that started doing the same thing.
Flowmasters
I came very close to going the Flowmaster route on my '06 GT vert. At the last minute I decided to spend a little more and went with Corsas. Absolutely thrilled with them. It's true, you get what you pay for.
The corsas look stupid underneath the car from behind
But anyways I went through 4 sets of warranty replacements from Flowmaster and they are junk. The problem has supposedly been fixed now though. One of the baffles inside always breaks, they have added reinforcement. I suggest you call Flowmaster and talk to Scott. Find your receipt and they will hook you up.

i dont think its a blown baffle only because the muffler IS loose. when i go to see if i can move it, it does with ease. im really REALLY hoping its just a sh!tty clamp because i got these off ebay and dont have any kind of reciept. cant afford new ones right now so my fingers are crossed.
If the muffler is loose then it's the el cheepo Flowmaster clamp that is the problem.
Dustin's right. Get the $2 "U" clamps at any Kragen (or parts store, doesn't matter) and bolt them down tight - problem solved.
I have done this and have over a year and 20k+ miles on my Flows with no further problems.

Another solution is to notch the end of the flowmaster pipe to give it a little more room to squeeze closed when you tighten the clamp. I had to do this when I moved the FM's from my '05 to my '07, neither one fit right on the '07. Fortunately, I had a cutoff blade for my circluar saw, and was able to just use that to cut notches at 90 degrees away from the notch that's already there for the locating pin. The blade is about 1/8 inch thick, and I went just far enough to go past where the clamp would be grabbed, so it could squeeze the sides of the pipe together.
This would take care of the loose fit, but if there is a baffle broken, then this isn't going to stop the rattle, obviously. Just fix the loose connection.
Good luck.

Hey guys, I have MACs and had the same exact problem and it was the clamp. My passenger side was rattling. The MACs are notched at the end of the pipe too...I had those little band clamps as tight as they would go and I could still move the muffler a little. I installed the U clamps everyone is talking about and the rattle went away. Just don't be cheap and get the $2.00 clamps...they rust in a matter of days if they get wet...I know because I tried that first. I bought the stainless U clamps for about $5 apiece and they're still rust free.

Using this method I was able to get the nut on the stud at least another full 1/4 inch to 1/2 inch further than without the WD-40 and just using hand tools. It has not come loose again after over 16 months.
old thread but still had to update it. well i finally ordered those clamps and installed it today. worked like a charm. also, when i took the muffler off to get the POS flowmaster clamp i decided to start it up and see exactly how loud it would be w/o any muffler..........soooo sweet!
i think i might put those 05-08 MUSTANG MUFFLER DELETE RACE PIPES on there that brenspeed has. they are cheap and the sound is just too intense for me NOT to do it. either that or finally get my exhaust cutouts (that i bought about 6 months ago but decided not to go through with it) installed and when i want it a bit louder ill just take the caps off and run it like that until i want to go back to the flowmasters.
if anyone has went with the cutouts and has a video could u direct me to it? i want to see what they would sound like. also im running with the stock hpipe and cats. really dont want to go catless.

they were alittle pricey but they work perfectly! worth every penny. also its free shipping and u might think that means you wont see them for 2 weeks but i ordered mine and got them in about 4 days. i recommend these clamps for any muffler install. its the best thing next to getting them fully welded.
also, i ordered 2 but i only needed one (they only come one in a box) because i thought my other muffler would need it but it doesnt. The POS flowmaster clamp has a tight hold on that one. if you only need one you could get it through me but if u need the pair then u gotta go through the site.
