First oil change..3 months or 5000Km?

Just wondering about this. It is now 3 months on my new Mustang and I only have 500 km on her. I received a letter the other day from my dealer regarding this. Am I to get the oil changed every 3 months regardless of the km? I assume when I hit 5000 km is when I need my first oil change. Am I correct?

I do not think I will ever get close to 5000 km in 3 months...Any advice appreciated. I will call the dealer just to confirm...I would hate to find out my warranty is void because I did not change the oil every 3 months...This is my first new car purchase and just want to make sure I understand...Thanks for any advice...

P.S I Love this Mustang...Best purchase of my Life...I only wish the weather was better to drive her...

Oil Change?

I don't think if you don't follow the service manual to a perfect "T" that any warranty is void. The service manual is recommended servicing for average conditions. I also have the same issue. I have had my stang since Dec4, have only 125 miles on it. I will not be bringing in the car for an oil change until summer at the earliest. I also have an Acura 3.2TL, that I use for the train station to commute into NYC for work, and I drive about 1500 -2000 miles a year on the car. I have the oil changed 2X a year.

If you were leasing the car, that may be a different story. If you don't do recommended service, they may say you were dilinquent and contributed to a problem if it happens during the lease period. I would like to hear from others. specifically Ford techs on this issue.

1st oil change

I had mine changed at 1000 miles just to get any material which may have worn from the engine out asap. At next oil change, about 4-5000 mile mark, I plan on switching to Mobil 1. I now have about 1700 miles on her since August 06. I'm sure the mileage will pick up as the weather gets better.

I did my first oil change at 500 miles and again at 1000 miles, then the every 3000 miles there after, only have 5000 miles on it now. Just did the one close to 4000 miles.

I would change it out now. Then again at 5000.
If you are going to use a high quality synthetic, you can get up to 15000km (~10000 miles for us yanks) out of each change.

Check your owners manual and service schedule booklet. I didn't run out and check, but I'm pretty sure that it has milage intervals not time frame. That's something the oil companies came up with. If you do the changes at the recomended milages, you'll be fine with the waranty. If however you do a lot of stop and go type driving, you may want to change it more often. I'm with Doug on doing the first two changes sooner to help clean out any break-in stuff. Every 3,000 after that with dino, or every 5,000 with full synthetic. (miles that is, Eh). Good Driving, Carl

My dealer (Machens in Columbia Missouri) SVC Manager stated that it should be changed every 5K. I got a free "fluids" for the first 25K so 5K it was and getting close to the second (I am at 8K now).

If that is wrong...guess who I will poke with the stick... <--FORD DEALER

I'd change the oil every 3,000 miles as a "just in case" you need to bring your car in for warranty repairs. What if Ford invalidates your warranty because they say you've been driving under "special operating conditions" (e.g. stop-and-go, city driving, etc), and you should have been following that schedule instead othe normal schedule?

I change my oil every 5,000km (3,000 miles) and never on time. In the 25+ years I've been driving, I've never had an engine failure using this as a guide.

With respect to time, I call BS, and if my dealer tries a warranty denial because of it, I'm going to ask for receipts for the 3 oil changes they should have done in the 11 months my car sat on their lot, even if it only had 125 km on it when I bought it

I'll have to check the maintenance interval log tomorrow to confirm this, but I believe it says to change the oil every 5,000 miles or 6 months whatever comes first. I got my car end of December 04 and since I don't drive that much I take my car in for service every 6 months.

I asked this question to a service writer that was a good friend of mine when I had another Mustang, and he told me it would be fine to wait until I hit the mileage when service was due...which in my case would mean one oil change a year.

With this car I take it in for service around the end of December and end of May.

Thanks again everyone. I looked in the manual and it states RECOMMENED oil change at 3 months or 5000 km. At 6 months or 10,000 km MUST be done. I assume regardless of km's, 6 months period.

I will call Monday to find out. Makes no sense to me to change the oil at 500 km unless to get the fine metals out...

Thanks again...

This is a good question because most Stangs will accrue 0 miles while being stored for 6 months. Synthetic engine oil is $5/qt, and we need 6 qt. Throwing $30 down the drain is kind of a waste and I never really understood the time requirement for engine oil. My daily driver gets about 6000 miles a year and I normally change the oil and filter once a year
