Don't worry, I don't hate motorcyclists. My father owned a Harley for many years. In fact, he tells me a story often of how he wasn't allowed to pick up my mother with it, lol. I have nothing against motorcyclists at all.
To Shea and mustangbear: This happened coming off a red light, we were just getting going. He fell off his darn bike maybe 20 ft after the intersection... unless I just sat there at the light for a good three seconds to let him get way ahead, there was no way I could have had the right amount of distance between him and me to avoid taking the extreme manuever I had to.
It's a little different when it's not a deer (and we have PLENTY of deer incidents here in South-Central NJ, especially Jackson Township), but a PERSON laying on the ground in front of you, your wheels about to chew him under - that's a whole different ballgame. Vehicular Manslaughter, jail time, life in ruins, that sort of thing ran through my mind in the split second I had to react. Could I have performed a less serious manuever and avoided him? Most likely, but I wanted to be SURE. I didn't want to hinge the rest of my life on a "most likely", you know?
I've always left plenty of room between me and the guy in front of me. That's how I've kept a perfect driving record since I got my license 4 1/2 years ago.
