I would probably fold the seats down to spare the leather. Your dog should still be able to fit on top of them and have enough room. I'd put a blanket or sheet down and make stops every hour and a half or so and take the dog for a little walk.

FOLD THE SEATS DOWN....why the heck didn't i think of that...Thanks!!!

And to the person who said "big deal its just a Mustang"... This is my first car that I've paid for 100% myself. Not all of us are big shots, I'm just a 25 year old kid...$30k is an crap load to me. Not to mention my current Honda is trashed and it disgusts me...I do NOT want that happening to my new car...even if it is "just a Mustang".

I actually am getting a doggie car seat that I will keep in my trunk. I'll bust it out whenever I plan on taking my pup somewhere. You are not overreacting.
My feelings exactly. Nothing wrong in taking good care of your stuff no matter how much it cost. Probably a good reason why my '88 BMW is still in near showroom condition....never had a dog in it!

Yes, you are overreacting making such a big deal about it. Buy a rear seat cover and a doggie car seat. Problem solved with minimal money and minimal fuss. I already have the car seat for my dog, though it's because I'm worried about my pup smashing into the windshield should I be in an accident as opposed to protecting my interior. I guess it's a matter of where your priorities are at. I'm more on the side of 'just a car' than 'just a dog'.

Actually the back seat so the dog can ride in the car is one of the factors that made me decide to get the Mustang as opposed to a two seater like a twin turbo RX-7 or a used Vette. (That and that I've wanted a Mustang since I was 16 and can finally afford one and I LOVE the new design)

You're right, I consider it protecting your investment.
All's you have to do is look at some people's homes. I'd rather live in an average, nice, clean, well cared for home, than have to live in a larger home that has tore up furniture, urine stained carpets, etc...

That's like saying, big deal, it's just an apartment... it's still someone's home and is still worthy of respect and care.

No dogs in my car under any circumstances. Sorry, but pets are pets. They don't know any better. Not their fault, but if something did happen, I'd drive myself nuts for days wondering why I did it in the first place. I have a truck where the pets go. Best place for them, and only place vehicle wise.

Take the dog and your wife! We have two small Yorkie-cross dogs and they travel just fine. Generally sleep. They don't eat or drink much on a trip so the bladder thing is not an issue. Just have to clean nose prints and bug guts off the glass at the end. Lots of good protection advice on TMS so have a good trip.

Okay - We're bringing the little dog along. She weighs 13lbs. Folding down the back seat will allow her unlimited access to the trunk too! Thanks for the input....i'll let you know how things go.

There is no way any animal other than humans are riding in my Mustang. I deal with the dog hair and mess in my other vehicle. I've already broken the news to him....he was bummed at first, but is now ok with it.

Dude you know you love the shiz tzu, I flew mine from Korea, and then loaded them in a van for a 200mile trip, they travel well. You can always detail your car.

Actually, he's a Kuvasz. They look VERY similar though.

I guess all dogs tear up furniture, and urinate all over the floor? Everyone I know that has dogs doesn't have that kind of trouble. If you can't train your dog well enough to be housebroken, maybe you shouldn't have one.

Who wants to take their wife to a HS reunion? Kinda like taking a sandwich to a buffet. Tell her no dog in the Stang, and when you get back you expect the house to be spotless and a hot meal on the table!

Oh, if my wife is reading this...just kidding dear, he should take his wife & dog at all costs.

I love my car... so don't get me wrong... but it is just a car. Sounds like your wife and I are similar when it comes to our dogs. My 4 pound Yorkie rides with me all the time! He's my son! (I can't have children.) He thinks he's human. Cover the seats and all will be fine. A little vacuuming and seat cleaner/protectant wipe down when you return will be all that is required.

My dog was less than a year old when I first took her in the car. It was a new experience for her and all the excitement caused her to: pee uncontrollably, barf, and poo uncontrollably (on separate occasions). It also didn't help that one time I was picking her up from a kennel (her first time, only 2 days though) She's a mini long haired dachshund, and they are known to be excitable.

She's over a year old now and hasn't had any accidents in the car for a long time. Point being is that even if they are house broken, there are tons of other variables at play, and I don't want to risk it in my new car. Also, dog hair is an unavoidable nuisance, regardless of how well behaved your pup is.

To the person who said they care more about their dog not going through the windshield than protecting the interior of their car...I'm a little offended that you would imply that I don't love my dog. I treat her like a daughter and am somewhat overly protective. ...but honestly, I don't think those doggie car seats are going to hold them in place if you get in a wreck anymore than if my gf was holding her in her arms and we got in a wreck. Sad, but true (imo). The main benefits of them (to me) are keeping the dog off you while driving, and keeping them off the car itself.

Act like its a big deal....pretend to think about for a while....look like you are agonizing over the decision...then allow it. But tell the wife she owes you.....see how she likes your high school crush if ya know what I mean.....Or, if you decide against it...tell her "Look, I already bought you a watch. I have no clue why you need a watch...the dang stove has a clock on it...."

(And I wonder why I am perpetually single.....)
