Gasoline won't reach $5.00 or $6.00 any time soon. Current prices are a market glitch - the mid-term estimate is that oil prices will fall substantially in the next few years. (Producers are producing flat out right now to take advantage of higher prices. At some point new production will overtake consumption and prices will fall. I'm not exactly sure of current estimates but there are at least 663 billion barrels of proven reserves of conventional oil in the Middle East alone. This is supplemented by over a trillion barrels of unproven reserves.

Additionally, according the the US Geological Survey oil is the fuel of the future. There is more alternative oil in this hemisphere in the form of tar sands in Canada and heavy oil fields in South America than there are proven reserves in all of the Middle East. According to their estimates it would cost an additional 50 cents per gallon to refine this alternative oil into the gasoline we all know and love today. (This estimate was from last year - before prices spiked. Right now my local gas station is about 20 cents away from the USGS estimate to make alternative oils economically viable.)

Venezuela estimates it's own heavy oil reserves at around 4 trillion barrels; thet's trillion with a tr! The Atasca Tar Sands also contain over a trillion barrels of unconventional oil. Additionally there are huge quantities of shale oil here in the US that could also be exploited.
From what I see we have many happy years of fairly cheap motoring in front of us.
But what about the Chinese? They are buying more and more cars every year. Wait until their economy is really booming because they will become the largest user of oil in the world-because oil is used to make plastic and nylon they already are a large oil consummer. I don't think we will run out of oil in my lifetime but I fear for my grandchildren. Don't forget what happened the last time an Asian country started running out of oil.

^ Never underestimate the power of human ingenuity. Every time we run into a crisis, we figure a way around it. I am not concerned about oil.

Now, the politicians on the other hand.....

Yeah well the SRT-8 is going to have 425hp Hemi engine that produces the same specs as our 300hp / 333 lbft torque 4.6. Now say is something not right here?? I know weight , etc. has a lot to do with it , but come on M.o.p.a.r. - Many Outrageous Parts Arranged Ridicuously !!! hehe my good ol mother taught me that one when I was a youngin.

I think getting a 4000 lb car to 60 mph in 5 sec would be a pretty good achievement.

Actually I wouldn't be suprised it if did. Similar to the Saturn Ion or Mazda RX-8, so that it has something different than the Mustang for favorable comparisons.
