Do I need new brake rotors?
Do I need new brake rotors?
I just bought my '06 GT about a month ago. It's in great shape, but there is rust on the brake rotors. What's the standard going price for a new set (front and rear)? Or is there maybe some kind of cleaning product I might be able to use to get rid of the rust? Thanks guys!
Rust where you have it there is pretty common. As long as the rotors are in spec there's no reason to replace them. Sometimes at work my boss has me pull the wheels off and paint over rust like that on rotors/hubs. Just be careful with masking the caliper and surface of the disk.
Yeah, the rust just annoys me when I look at it. Would something like this be equivalent to the stock rotors? Or is there somewhere I can get ones that are the same as stock?

Rotors are made out of steel and will rust. Even the brand new OEM rotors I put in back in September had surface rust within a few weeks. I guess you could paint it like Kevin said (I honestly never thought of that), or learn to live with it. You would obviously want to mask off not only the part the brake pad touches, but also the mating surface towards the center that the wheel contacts when mounted. Otherwise the wheel would probably stick to it, and if the paint weren't evenly coated, the wheel wouldn't mount flush to the rotor/hub and you could get wheel shake.
As for cleaning products, Advance Auto sells rust converter gel (basically gelled phosphoric acid), which is meant more for body work.

The iron of the rotors is going to rust because it is unpainted. The brake pads keep the swept area clean but the rest will rust. Some aftermarket rotors have painted hats and vents. Even that doesn't last all that long. Just paint the hat area as others have suggested. The more heat and environmental attack the paint can take the longer it will last.

My self and several other members on the forum here use these , the part that rusts is zinc coated. I've had mine on for over 3 years now and that part still isn't rusted ...

newtakeoff.com has the factory rotors brand new and relatively cheap. Shipping is a little costly though because of the weight (unless you live in Indiana where they are located like I do
)
