changed mine at 3k a couple weeks ago- like how filter almost upright- you can prefill filter at least halfway(let paper soak up, fill again) before mounting to minimize dry run at startup. Always carefully run finger around inside threads too- Ive pulled metal burrs out from apparently dull taps cutting threads before- rather have it stuck in my finger than my bearings

I figured that only the best for my 'stang. Why do you say it is a waste to spend money on synthetic?

I also have only found the oil in 1 gt containers.

I agree with the others that access is very easy for oil and filter changes.

Is there anything else you need to do or check when changing the oil? Do you need to lube anything? I've always had the dealer change my oil because of the XX point inspections and lube services they provide, but if I can do everything myself, I may just start doing it.

No lube fittings on the stang, everything is sealed. However, you will want to check all other fluids, tire pressure, battery terminals, etc. Specifications are in the owners manual.

The Walmart here in Indy has the 5 quart jug of Motorcraft 5W20 blend for about $9.50. Haven't found the jug of Mobil 1 5W20 though. I am still looking for it too.

I've owned an '87 LX 5.0 and an '89 GT in the past...I should be picking up my Windveil Blue '06 GT next week...Question? What side is the oil drain plug on (passenger or driver)?

The filter gasket tends to stick to the engine, be sure to check each and every time that you don't install the new filter over the old filter gasket.

This causes.....problems...


The oil drain plug is in the center really on the back of the pan.

i use full synthetic which should be good for 10-15k but if i change at this pace will it create a problem with the warranty?

If you don't follow the directions in your owners manual, expect problems if anything happens to the engine under warranty.

I use full synthetic too (Mobil1 5W-20), but I will change mine every 5k regardless of whether it NEEDS it or not. I would rather change it more often than need be than not enough.
I changed mine at 250 (used Motorcraft) and then again at 1,000 (used Mobil1 and will from now on) and she is 800 from the 6,000 oil change.

Of course FORD would recommend FORD MOTORCRAFT Oil.
Full synthetic last longer and protects better, pretty sure that has been proven. I want this car to last FOREVER ( ) and synthetic is just one way I plan to do that.

I changed my oil at 500.

Walmart had the 5 qt. bottle.

Takes 6 quarts anyhoo with filter.

Motorcraft is Havoline.
Havoline is Texaco.
Texaco was bought by Chevron.

Texaco Motor Oil is a Quality Motor oil. At least it used to be one of the best.
The only issue I had changing the oil the first time was that the freakin oil filter was torqued on to 100 foot pounds from the factory. Broke a filter wrench on the darned thing. Got ye Ol Industrial strenth wrench and FINALLY got it off.

I`m changing MY oil every 3000 miles , like it or not Ford! With filter.
I have never been a big fan of synthetic oils , but to each their own. If I`m changing it that often , I`ll stick with Dino juice.

Actually, you are doing what Ford says. In my GT manual it says to change every 5000 miles UNLESS you meet the following criteria

Dusty enviroment, extended or heavy use, etc. Then it says every 3000 miles. So actually, if your dealer wants to stick it to you, they will ask for your records and see you've changed every 5000 miles in a "dusty" area and say you havn't performed proper maintenance for the prevailing conditions.

Not saying they would, but the manual reccomends both 5000 and 3000 mile intervals based on climate and use variables.

No problem, I've known a couple honest guys that kept up with maint on their vehicles and have gotten them voided after a major failure for technicalities like this. Neither owned a Ford, but eh, better safe than sorry.

Good call. I also changed my oil in the first week of getting the car, & I will HIGHLY recommend doing that for any new owners. The metal that came out in that oil was pretty surprising.

I was amazed how tightly the filter was torqued. I didn't break my wrench, but wow!
Does anyone have a clue why?

I believe it is because the gasket isn't lubricated when the filter is installed at the factory. Atleast thats what others on here have said.

so funny u ask, i just bought all my oil and im doing it probably over the weekend. autozone carries it. i just bought that exact stuff today. its a breeze
