Talking

So I am out at this place in Davie with a few buddies of mine and we call it quits just past 1:00am. I live up in Boynton Beach so I have at least a 40 minute drive back home. One of my friends has a black 2002 Z06 Vette (believe that's the model number - the one with 400 horses) and he is headed in the same direction as me for at least half the trip. He LOVES his Vette and is one of those people who drives very 'flashy' , showing off the car every chance he gets. I am much more lowkey in the way I drive.

So we are on the highway (595) and jump onto the Turnpike northbound, go through the tolls (at Commerical blvd, for locals) and he calls me on the phone about something that happened earlier in the night, we're joking around - locked in right around 80 - you can make good time and don't really have to worry too much about pulling heat from State Troopers as long as you are paying attention. So the road is pretty much EMPTY (about 1:30 am), he's in the right hand lane and I'm sidling up next to him in the center lane, about to try and get a pic of him with my camera phone as a joke - I'm maybe just a foot or two off his rear fender. And then he jumps on it - the windows are down so I hear his exhaust bark, so with the phone still in my right hand, I put my right foot all the way down.

We are humming - both exhausts are making a sweet sound - its kinda windy but as I realize I'm still driving with one hand, I also realize the car is holding pretty darn steady too - which I am very happy about - no vibrations from the hood folks have talked about,etc..... But I drop the phone anyway.

After a few seconds I look down and I see we've just broken 120 and just after that he starts to steadily walk away from me (told me on the phone he ended up hitting 130). But I am very happy to report that up until that point, I was LOCKED in that same position right off his rear quarter panel - like we were in formation. The Dark Knight II hung in with him the that whole way and didn't lose a step till we hit about 123 or so.

A minute or so later he hits his exit and and I lock the cruise in at 78 and motor the rest of the way home....... really wanted to drop the hammer again but knowing how stupid my luck can be sometimes, I decided not to push it.

You gotta love that turnpike, I hit some pretty high speeds there myself when I lived in Miami.

err... I don't understand how it's possible you hung with a z06 on the highway (where they are VERy strong), unless he was a gear or two higher then he should have been.

Good story, and glad to know the cars handle that fast, but we don't need people thinking their 05 GT is as fast as a z06 vette who read the thread and don't know better =)

He DID say that the Z06 pulled away from him, correct?

I deduced that he meant the Mustang was nearly as fast, but just not quite as fast as Vette territory. Which, in reality, is quite true.

I didn't hear any mention of the Mustang being as fast as the Vette, just that he kept up for a while, and who cares really anyway.

Good story Dave.

Been wondering if I made the right decision gettin' the Stang instead of the 05 Vette...
after walkin' a 02-04 coupe up-to that speed last week, it put to rest most of those concerns ... -still miss not havin' a museum delivery

B) Cool story. keep safe out there.

Well all I said was that I hung with him for those 8 to 10 seconds or so. Talking later, he told me he didn't downshift from where he was (I didn't either actually - I should have dropped to fourth..) - and he mentioned today he DID expect me to suddenly grow very small very fast in his mirror - and I DIDN'T, so at least I surprised him. Like I said though, after 120 he truly walked away from me like I was going 60... (told me today he hit 133) - the whole reason I posted was to show that a bone stock '05 is a little more surprising than people think.

And yeah careful is the key - I have had this car since 12/20 and this is the first time I have even broken 95 - my buddy with the Vette is always yacking about how much faster it is than most things on the road and he's usually driving quite 'aggresively', and tries to bust on me because I don't lean on the gas all the time and gun it from light to light. Mostly I cruise......
That's fine for him - I'll drive my car the way I want to. In the end, it was 1:30 AM on an EMPTY stretch of interstate - and the whole thing lasted maybe 15 seconds... and I wanted to let the GT stretch its legs a little bit.
I certainly wasn't doing 80 on a surface street where someone could stumble out into the road....
