Has anyone thought of a good gift as a thank-you etc for a job well done to their salesperson?

I'd like to get/do something for the guy. I made him stay over an hour late today when I bought my car.

* btw, I'll gonna post some pics and details of the purchase tomorrow when I can get out and get some pics. I ended up with something totally different than I ordered, but something even better

You know, when I first saw this thread, I thought perhaps a dealer was trying to give a gift to a customer. After all, after getting that juicy commission, he or she could afford to get the customer something really nice!

Cash is always well-received. I tipped my guy a C note. He went well beyond my expectations. He called me as soon as my car came in, swiped the keys so the PDI guy couldn't take it until I had a chance to check her out, and has followed up with me beyond the critical "survey" period. He also confided to me that his commission was a meager $125, a typical amount for the type of transaction.

However, ANY token of appreciation will be appreciated I'm sure. It's nice that you want to reward good service. People should do that more often.

Having been on the receiving end of some very nice tokens of appreciation from customers, personally I think you can't go wrong with a gift certificate to a nice restaurant, a gourmet food basket, ot just some bagels or donuts. We are really easy to please.

Here's a little hint, when you go in to service for your 1st oil change or check up, take a couple dozen donuts to the service advisor. In most cases, the service advisors and mechanics are as hard a working persons as there are in the dealership but they never get any of the glory or good bonus's like the salespeople. They really appreciate a little thoughtfulness.

Wow, I had no idea that a salesman's commission would be as low as $125! Geez, I'm glad you guys told me. I'll be getting my salesman something too. He did a great job last year with the F150 purchase, and I'm sure he'll do the same with the '06 stang.

I really thought they made more on commission than that!

The commisions can vary widely. Somestores pay 30% of the profit generated on your deal. That's $750 on a $2,500 GT vert profit. Other stores, mine included, pay a flat fee (usually $150) so we need to do volume.

As for thank you's, I've received alot of alcohol lately (must be to smooth out the upcoming 40th birthday) as well as dinners, etc. As with any type of tip, it doesn't matter what it is, the fact that someone gave something is always cool. Alot of guys (and gals) can spend alot of time getting beat up by customers, the tokens of appreciation really help make up for the rough customers.

I really thought they made more on commission than that!

Traditionally at most dealerships, the salesperson receives a % of the gross profit above invoice. For X-plan, etc they usually get a flat pay such as $100-$150. So at these dealershipd that sell GT's for $2000-$5000 over MSRP, the salesperson does very well.

Unfortunately other than Mustang and F-series, sales have tanked all over so it is real tough for a lot of salespersons to make a living. There's only so many Mustang buyers and a lot of dealers are short on mustang inventory. Heck. last month the Mustang outsold the "hot" Chrysler 300 and those dealers have a lot more product to sell from.

The national average sales for a car salesperson are 8-10 total new and used cars per month. Unless you are at the top end in your dealership, most are struggling just to make ends meet, especially if they sell a higher number of new than used [which is where they make their money as most new vehicles are sold close to invoice].

I just today gave the Tech at a new dealership I went to a Olive Garden gift certificate. He worked on his lunch hour to reactivate my Global Remote feature. They also took care of my brake problem when the other dealership where I bought the car, wouldn't do anything. I offered the Service Advisor a Chilis Gift Certificate and he wouldn't take it, he was just glad I took care of the Tech. Very classy, in my opinion.

If it was Cory don't worry and with the commission he'll get do not feel bad , and you'd better be posting some pictures ? or you'll not be getting any nanners now that there are at least 4 white GT's around mine will have one in the back window unless the kids are playing. Congrates on the wheels BTW

Kevin - I hope your lovely wife didn't have to arm-wrestle the salesguy for that deal on the new truck - or was that the method of determining which of you two gets to drive the Mustang - and she lost????

Daniel1981,

That's a nice gesture on your part. Like others have mentioned, anything showing your appreciation will be fine; it's the thought that counts and will be well received.

When I was in the business I received some Thank you gifts, restuarant gift certificates, fudge, Cuervo, even dinners which led to some very nice dates . I even sold a car to Coach Reeves' son. Coach gave me an autographed football and signed photo and he took me to a couple of their practices, tix to a Giants/Dallas game and an escort into the Giants locker rooms. I remember standing in front of Phil Simms' locker; they retired it! I even went to Coach Reeves' house and met his family!

I asked my salesperson what he'd like and without skipping a beat said, "whiskey". I also got the manager a bottle of wine for all his help and patience.

We are lucky to wait as long as we do, because you forget about it all once she arrives!!!
