EDIT: Hmm, maybe it's nto the power steering after all...

Note: Yeah, I'm pretty sure I've got my head around the simple answers to this question, like "dude it's ur power steering pump lol" and "get ur belts checked hehe". I'm just wondering if anyone has experienced this problem, and aside from the obvious "take it to the dealer and have them check it out", if anyone had any suggestions.

Over the last couple days I've noticed a faint, harmonic humming sound from the power steering whenever turning tightly left or right at low speeds. Has anyone else experienced this?

OMG, you too? I thought I was the only one. The steering wheel "whines" when turning. It is going into the dealer next week to get the steering wheel replaced (pitted center), and they'll take a look at it. My car has over 29,000 miles on it. It just started this noise a little over a month ago.

Mine does it too Started about 3 weeks ago, I've got 12000m on mine. Almost sounds like rubber tires on slippery floor, but very faint. It might have been doing it longer and I never heard it due to loud exhaust or stereo. I also have done the research to find out if it does it all the time or just sometimes.

EXACTLY... It's not like the classic "power steering pump is going bad" sound, it's much more harmonic and faint... Exactly like you said, like tires on slick pavement. Hmm...

I think every ford power steering pump has that god-awful humming noise.

My father's '89 Areostar has done it since I can remember, same with my mother's 98 Taurus. I've yet to hear it on my Mustang

From what I understand power steering pumps when turned all the way, strain and make noise. It's not good for them. I would avoid doing so.

Like a guy at work said about some software glitch:

"It's not a bug, it's a feature!"

I have it too and I try to avoid turning the steering wheel at the max and keeping it like that for more than 5 seconds. This is even mentioned in the Owners' Manual, on page 149, last paragraph.

Nah, I'm not buying the fact that "they all sound like that." (No offense meant)

It just started doing it, and 2 different passengers both said "whoa, what's that noise?" when it happened. I guess I'll take it into the dealer and see what's up with it.

Over in http://forums.bradbarnett.net/index.php?showtopic=38402

they discuss something similar to what we've been discussing here. Do you think it's the same issue?
