The lesson here, which I'm sure you've learned, is that you can't take your eyes off the road even if it was only a half second like you said. The other cars in front of you were able to stop because they were paying attention.
I did the exact same thing 21 years ago - I pulled some cash out of my pocket and was counting it, and when I looked up, the car in front of me had stopped for a left turn and I sideswiped him. His car didn't really get hurt at all, but my new Z28 was dented from the door to the rear quarter. I was sick. The car was fixed for something like $2500 (1984 dollars) but was never the same after that appearance-wise. The paint job spider-webbed a year or two later and I lived with that for another 5 years...
