Convertible Top Issue

My wife lowered the top of her 2005 Vert and some of the material didn't fold right and was sticking up past the hardpart of the roof---we lifted to top about half way and noticed there are elastics on both sides that help the material fold under the hard part of the roof. These things have no tension anymore just like any elastic fabric when it gets older. Has anyone had this issue and have what have you done to fix it?

I have an 06' vert and I'm on my way to your exact situation. You could try tying a knot in the elastic, that way it won't be so loose or go to a fabric store and purchase some elastic and cut out the old and sew in the new. Leave about a half inch on each end of the old elastic and sew the new one onto the ends.

Good luck,
Alex

Have you checked the aftermarket to see if anyone produces replacements? I had a Honda S2000 and its top also has elastic bands that help the bows fold down properly. When the elastic stretches the top won't go all the way down. One of the aftermarket providers sells replacements that cure the problem. It is possible that someone in the Mustang community does the same.

I had the same problem on my 2006 GT convertible. What I ended up doing was removing the fastener that holds the elastic to the metal bow, and pulling the elastic in some more, cutting out a new hole, and refastening it back to the bow. So far it has worked pretty well, I no longer have the top bunching up at the back when I lower it down.

I'll try and snag a few pics later today to show what I am talking about.
