Is the convertible top in cloth worth an extra $5055
I don't know how North Carolina weather treats a convertible, but I saw a cloth top at the local Ford dealer a couple of weeks ago, and it had lint and all kinds of residue on it. I'm glad the cloth wasn't available when I got mine, because I thought it looked better and would have bought it. I have had a couple of 1966 convertibles and the vinyl is much easier to take care of here in Michigan.
For the local SCCA autocrosses, its not racing, but a "low speed event", so a roll bar is not needed. I checked with VIR and CMR, two local road courses, and I will need a rollbar and have to race with the top up. I am looking at a 4 point Autopower bar for $350.
I figure by the time I am 50, I will want a Corvette, Tesla, or a Vantage Roadster.

The vert will require a roll bar be installed before you can put it on the track. Make sure where you park it is VERY secure and you can never leave anything inside, it just takes a pocket knife to steal the 75cents in quarters you left in the console. Cost of the top is your problem. I've owned verts but would never consider one for a daily or if I did not have a garage to keep it in. Like others have said, if you are on the fence, forget it. If you REALLY want it, it is a comitment in care and upkeep.
If you plan on doing track time then get a coupe. I'm keeping this one and when I pick up a 2010 its going to be a vert. I would skip the cloth top though, looks like a pain to maintain, and its not super-nice cloth like the 03/04 cobra used that was sourced from Jaguar. Its more like the cloth on a 90's eclipse.

Once you go vert you will never go back. GET THE VERT You wont regret it promise.
The fact of the matter is the coupe guys are just jelous that they didnt by verts. And by the way Redfire is the fastest color.

I have gone back and forth on the decision to get a Coupe or the Vert. With the x-plan pin, its gonna cost me an extra $4543, is it worth it?
Convertible owners especially, I want to hear from you.
1. People tell me you only get the chance to own a convertible one in a lifetime, so do it they say.
2. With my occupation, I can participate in parades and such.
3. Other friends have convertibles also, but nothing really sporty.
4. I will race it at monthly SCCA parking lot autocrosses and twice yearly racing at VIR roadcourse.
5. I will drive it to work rarely, assigned space, interstate most of the way, maybe 4 times a month.
6. It will be driven mostly for fun, the occasional errand, and part of networking with new people.
7. I do not have a garage for it to be stored in.
8. My current vehicles get the care they need with regular Zaino and interior treatments, it wouldn't change with the Mustang.
9. The mod bug will hit and I will want aftermarket intake, exhaust, suspension, and tuning. I am not much on non-performance mods like interior pieces.
10. Finally, what is the convertible life like? I am 35 and going thru the mid-life crisis thing. I met one Mustang convertible owner at the dealership. She never puts the top up and stores it in the garage. She had only 4k miles after 12 months.

I have owned 6 Mustangs and 3 convertibles (2 were Mustangs). I think the convertible is definately worth it but convertibles are not for everyone.
Sunday drives, cruising at night and trips to and around town at the shore are certainly more enjoyable with the top down.
As far as looks go, the coupe (fastback) style is classic, but the convertible is just as appealing. I have had people follow me while driving my '07 GT convertible and pull into driveways and parking lots to check out and comment on the car. Never happened to me in a coupe or a fastback.
Bottom line: get the convertible if you want it and can afford the extra $$$$$.

This is my first vert. and I'm very pleased with it. I have four vehicles plus a 24' boat in my driveway and the garage is full of building supplies as I'm about to build a new house. It will have 4+ garage stalls but for now my vert. stays outside.
Anyway, I have the cloth top and love it. Eckler's Corvettes is just around the corner so I got a RaggTop kit from them when I picked up my vert. I treated the top the first day and water just beads up on the surface. I also purchased a car cover that would not shed fibers on the cloth top as I cover it each evening. It's not my daily driver but when the weather is nice (99% of the time here) I put the top down and make the 15 minute commute to work. No complaints yet.
