Before the new Chevy Cobalt two-door has even gone on sale, the bowtie brand has laid out the specs for what will be the hottest Cobalt available, the '05 Chevrolet Cobalt SS Supercharged Coupe. The SS version of the new Chevy compact will come with a supercharged version of the Ecotec 2.0-liter four that puts out 205 hp. A five-speed manual transmission will be the sole gearbox. In addition to a sport-tuned suspension and better brakes, the Cobalt SS gets 18-inch wheels, sporty cladding and spoilers, spicier interior trim and a new range of colors including Rally Yellow, Black, Orange Metallic, Victory Red and Arrival Blue Metallic. Standard equipment includes air conditioning, power windows and locks, remote keyless entry, a CD player with MP3 playback and a seven-speaker Pioneer premium sound system. No pricing information has been released.

It seems there may some more competition for the v-6 and the v-8 coming from toyota. I went to a toyota dealship last night to look at celicas and met a rather intelligent salesman. He told me toyota was slowly probably phasing out the celica to shift its line to the family car as Honda has done. In the celica's spot, there would be a car out called the tC under the Scion nameplate. its very similar to teh celica but a bit more powerful
4 cylinder 16 valve VVTi engine
159 HP and 163 Lb/ft torque. Because Scion is designed to be able to be customized, the tC will be available supercharged from the factory.
the tC spec sheet attatched. its supposed to his dealers this june.
Scion
Then, he told me about a proposed revival of the Supra under a different name. The Vulta is still a concept, but was jsut recently put on Toyotas website as a concept, perhaps its entering a phase between concept and production. its ugly as sin in my opinion, but i dont work for toyota.
edit: the tC he said is supposed to start at the same price as a base v6 stang. and he knew quite a bit about the 2005 mustang too so i did have a tnedency to think he was an exception to the rule and knew more about cars than what was on the window sticker.

The Vulta sounds really impressive though mechanically. Perhaps if they changed the design.... might even consider it over a mustang
Volta Site
0-60 in 4 seconds! 408 hp from a hybrid engine! kinda makes my jaw drop

Thats a lot better than the cavalier. GM keeps pouring only slightly better than mediocre engines in front wheel drive cars. That's stupid. But I'm sure there are quite a few people stupid enough to buy them.

I was really dissapointed to find that it only has 37.6" of front headroom. I can wiggle under 38.0"-38.4" in some cars, but 37.6" is flat out for me. It's that #$%^^# sunroof that comes standard.

I saw this car at the MPLS auto show, and I liked it better than I thought I would. It looks better in the metal than on the internet, IMO. 18" wheels look fairly impressive on a car this size.
It's driving the wrong wheels, but with a light 4-banger up front it should still handle decently. It's basically an Ion Redline without the cheesy interior.
The car at the show didn't have the big spoiler. That thing is out of control!

The Cobalt isn't bad. The spoiler on the SS has to go, but otherwise it's really good power for a four and the looks are much better than the crummy old J-car (Cavalier). The Pontiac sister car, the Pursuit, is GAWDAWFUL and I don't know where the two got separated. This is probably a similar powertrain to what they're going to stuff in the Pontiac Solstice (one of the few new designs from Pontiac that I actually love!).
The new tC sounds like it's worth a look (although not as a Mustang replacement, not in my book...a 'Stang's gotta have an eight and the tC won't stack up in that demographic). As for the Vulta though...great tech, awful design. Such is the legacy of Toyota. (At least in my opinion. )

I would agree with the overglolified Cavalier remark....Same thing I think about the GTO as well....The v6 and v8 mustangs put those cars to shame as far as looks and performance in my opinion....
