I was bored and decided to go drive around a bit. 11:30PM is about as good as it gets for light traffic here. I was driving around for about an hour and getting on it here and there, trying to be careful not to spoil my perfect driving record. Went down this nice curvy stretch that went for about 5 miles or so. Almost no traffic! So I flipped a U-turn and decided it would be safe enough to get into the gas and have some fun. I charged up this nice sweeping incline was doing maybe 90 at the top when I see a police car sitting at the corner of a residential street waiting for a fool just like me.

I know he had plenty of time to hit me with his radar. I hit the brakes but was doing maybe 50 as I passed him, the limit was 40. I got down to 45 and just kept cruising as he darted out behing me. I was waiting for the lights and trying to think of an excuse but he just kept following me, no lights. This car is really hard to keep at 40ish so I hit cruise control and waited. I KNEW I was caught dead to rights but after a mile or two of of sweating it out, the lights never came on and he eventually just pulled of.

What a relief, although I was bummed about having my fun spoiled, it could/should have been worse.

Sounds like a "good guy" who decided to let you slide he when saw that you backed off on the gas. I've been let off with a warning far more often than I've been cited, even before I worked for a local PD. Most cops are good guys, though I'm not defending all of them. They have to write some tickets or the brass thinks they're out there doing nothing, especially the traffic enforcement units.

As one officer mentioned on another thread, many times they just want to check you for warrants or signs of DUI. If you are polite, they will often let you go with a warning or if they cite you will write you for less than your true speed.

With that said, one reason I chose Mineral Grey is that I hope it will have a lower profile than other colors, with regard to both police and thieves.

You didn't get a ticket because you were paying attention. When I was stationed and living in California, at least once a year we'd have a presentation by the CHP on base. One thing they always preached was that your chances of getting a ticket are greatly reduced if you just acknowlege their presence and slow down. It's always worked for me, and the same common sense approach works in AZ as well.

In the past 20 years, I've gotten 2 speeding tickets, and each time I got one, I didn't see the cop. In fact both times I was driving with a passenger in the car and was conversing instead of paying full attention to the road. Most times I spot them, even the unmarked vehicles that hide out on exit ramps waiting for me like Wyle E. Coyote waiting for a chance at some Road Runner buttroast.

That doesn't work everywhere though. But here in the southwest/southern cal area it works well.

While I have had some incidents with police that I thought were BS - there have been more times when they were really good. Think its like sixty-six says, if you not acting the fool, you will probably be ok most of the time. I remember one incident on the interstate when i was cruising around 85 at night, and the next thing I know, there is a state trooper next to me using his hand to tell me to slow down, I back off - then he smiled and took off.

Cop: Why were you speeding kid? you rattled my f'ing doors!
Me: (wetting my pants that my perfect record will be scarred forever) Because.... I have to go see my girlfriend... (it was the truth lol)
Cop: (cracking smile) well, don't you want to make sure you get there son? Next time dont speed or you might never see her again.
Me: o-ok sir
Cop let me go with a warning, Phew
a little honesty goes a faaaaar way lol
that was the first and only time I have been pulled over. I hope it never happens again.

See, we are not all bad ticket writing tools or pawns of the system. I've said it before and I'll say it again, more people talk themselves into tickets than out of them. Be honest, polite and no donut jokes and most likely you'll come out of it ok. You still might get a ticket but more often than not I can guarantee(did I spell that right) it will be less than what you could have got. Just be smart about the whole thing because there are some who take writing tickets a litlle too seriously. Sorry be for the long post, you may carry on now.

You know it is shocking to consider, but most people actually talk themselves right into a ticket. For instance; WHY ARE YOU STOPPING ME OFFICER? or WHAT SEEMS TO BE THE PROBLEM?

My speedometer is broke, I have to go to the bathroom, I was just keeping up with the rest of the traffic, I was just passing that car, or I had my cruise set at @@mph will get you a ticket just about every time.

If you would say thing like, I had my head in my hiney, When I saw you I looked at my speedometer and saw I was speeding, or I'm sorry I just wasn't paying attention, you will more than likely get away with a written or verbal warning.

Courtesy and common sense go along way

Unfortunately, those two items are sometimes in too short supply...
