Changing Spark Plugs Problem,

Finally changing spark plugs in my 07 gt Got four of them out by turning then spraying, waiting, turning, and spraying etc. Three of them the threads on the spark plug came out and the spark plug stayed in. Did not break, was able to put the threads back in and tighten back up.
Question is how to you get the plug out after the threads come out?
One I could not get loose so sprayed and waiting till I try it again.
Thanks in advance, Keith

Ah yes, the old two piece spark plug problem.

You need to read this:

https://themustangsource.com/forums/...-plugs-522706/

All of it. It details this problem and how to deal with the plugs. There is a tool you need to acquire, either borrow or buy, to do this, and then you just have to have time, patience, and it'll work out.

Hope that helps ya, and good luck, man!

Had to buy the tool

Ending up breaking off 4 of the spark plugs. Purchased the tool at napa.
Did a wonderful job. Started it up Idled rough for a little bit then smoothed out. Ran it out the road and ran just fine. Thanks for the Help.

Glad to hear you got it settled OK. Out of curiosity, how many miles were on those plugs?

You can probably turn around and sell that tool for purchase price. I bought mine on a Friday, did the plugs on Saturday, and sold it on Sunday for exactly what I paid. There are a lot of cars with the original plugs, and a lot of people that have or will have this problem.

I had 96,000 miles on the car. Still ran fine but I figured they needed to be changed. You could tell how worn they were when compared to the new ones.

Glad the Lisle tool worked well for you.. Your also fortunate that only 4 plugs broke with 96k miles.. Unless you end up keeping the car indefinitely ? Chances are you won't be doing another spark plug change anyhow

Yeah, IIRC, the service manual calls for a 100k interval on the plugs so you were pretty much due. After hearing all these horror stories, I chickened out and changed mine at 47k w/ motorcraft and again at 85k with
E3 plugs E3 plugs
. Not because of any purported HP gains but because they're 1-piece plugs so they're a lot less likely to break.

I replaced my two-piece plugs at like 30k miles with the Copper Brisk Racing plugs (one-piece). Unfortunately, they're only good for 20k miles, so I replaced them with the standard Motorcraft plugs around 50k. I traded it into the dealer when I got my 2016, so not my problem anymore!

I've had my '07 FX4 5.4 for a few years and while Ford once said 100K, I hear that now Ford says change them by 60K. Many mechanics I know agree .... get them early. Just bought the '08 Mustang a couple years ago ... and I bought a Lisle Tool about same time. This Spring of 2016 the '07 5.4 will have a little over 55,xxx miles and the Mustang may see 30,xxx by Summer .... so I'll swap out their plugs this Spring and then ...... sell the tool maybe?

When I replaced my plugs someone on the forum said I'd have a 50/50 chance that it would break off and wouldn't you know it 4 out of 8 broke. The Lisle tool did do the trick. Although OP I would have changed the COP's at the same time. Mine had about 86K before they started to go. One went totally dead and another wouldn't fire all the time.

might be luck, but I just replaced one coil on my mercury- 2002 with 175,000 miles on it.
still havent changed my Mustang plugs yet(06/75k miles), cars parked for winter, maybe tomorrow will be the day...got the OTC collet tool thats supposed to help PREVENT breakage, and the Lisle puller just in case, and MSD plugs...still have a set of screwed up champions I shoulda returned years ago- they were complete garbage- metal shavings crimped under the seal, one wasnt even fully threaded, likely woulda damaged the head if installed, plus all the tips were off center- woulda had to gap diagonally... the MSD one piece plugs are jewelry compared to champion- iridium not platinum tipped though...

2008 model year uses a one piece plug that doesn't break. We are lamenting having the pre-12-2007 build design of wretched 2 piece plugs that break off when you look at them.

Be glad!

So technically that's 2008 Job #2 V8 Mustangs. 2008 Job #1 V8 Mustangs would have the 2 piece plugs.

I think the production date would be post 12/03/2007 from this thread

OP, what new plugs did you put back in? Did you use the nickle anti-seize?
