Can Dealer change the Priority Number on X-Plan?
I'm about ready to order a 2006 Mustang GT Convertible, from a dealer in New Jersey who will sell it to me on the X-Plan, with a priority code between 10 and 20.
However, I have another dealer who is telling me that I'm better off buying MSRP from them, with a priority code of 10. They claim that the dealer who is willing to sell me on X-Plan, will give me a priority 20 but all other orders a higher priority (10) for those willing to pay MSRP - meaning that I may never see my Mustang, if the dealer's allocation is low. I may keep getting "pushed back".
They also said that although I might order it with a priority code of 20, which would be reflected on the DORA, the dealer could change the priority code after the fact to lower, and I would never know it.
Can anyone comment about the facts of how this works?
Any suggestions?

Well first of all, I don't trust what dealers tell me and especially not what one dealer says about another dealer. It sounds like that other dealer is just trying to steal a sale away from the other dealership.
I never knew about priority numbers when I ordered mine X-plan. I called later, once I read it here in TMS, and talked to the ordering guy. After our conversation, he upgraded my priority from 40 (showing on the VPO) to 20 (showing on the DORA). I asked how many cars in front of me, he said 9, and so far everything has gone ok. Look at my signature for details.
I spoke to the X-plan dealer again this morning...
He said that the system won't currently let them order an 06 Mustang. They think it will probably be in mid-June when they are allowed to order the 06's (which is around the time the pricing will be available).
I mentioned to him that some people online are talking about how they "force the system" to allow ordering 06's.
I wonder if I'm being fed a bunch of bullpoo.
How does one "force the system"? I remember reading references to that online here somewhere.

It's true what Altoid siad - A dealer could show you a 10, but change it once it's in the system to a 40, or whatever. Some dealers put all cars in as 10, while others have a numbers system. If the dealer is not willing to go x-plan, he will tell you anything to go with them at MSRP.
I'd go with the x-plan - at least they are being up front with the priority number they will give you.

Yeah there is a degree to putting your faith in your dealer when ordering. I didn't get screwed around with at my dealership. But they also class all customer orders at 10 and all stock orders at 20.
I believe priority 1-5 is reserved for factory only though.
