Burning smell? New exhaust?

I find that after the engine gets fully warmed up (either from driving or just idling), I'd smell something burning. I assumed it was the clutch but upon further investigating, I found it was coming from the exhaust pipes.

Is it normal for a new exhaust system on a S-197 GT to do this? Is it because of the catalytic converters? Since the GT only has 2 cats, I'm wondering if it is the result of the lack of pre-heaters (4 or 6 cats total for a V engine).

Same here...I smelled something burning. I just thought it is a new car and the exhaust would do this for some time...I do not think it is a problem...The smell is not that bad but, you notice it...I hope there is nothing wrong...

YES, it is normal. I got 1K on mine and every once-in-a-while I still get a whiff...

I've driven and broken in new vehicles before and never noticed this type of odor. Usually new cats will give off a sulfur-like odor from the fuel flashing off the new substrate (IIRC that is).

However, the engine purrs and the exhaust gurgles... it's friggin awesome for a factory-stock car!

Best sounding FACTORY exhaust out there of ANY car I think. Anyway, that smell is totally normal and it will go away with time. I've got 35K on mine and if I run it pretty hard shortly before getting to my destination, I will still smell that smell. I also love hearing the cats/exhaust creaking and crackling after it's been run hard!!

I noticed that smell when I first got the car, but it wore off very soon. In fact, the delivery guy at the dealer who handed me the keys said to expect the smell for awhile and that it is "undercoating" that is responsible .
