Best place to buy radar detectors?
The V1 produced mediocre results compared to the Bel RX65 and the Passport 8500 x50 in the latest results. It's certainly a good detector but I'm too busy watching the road to look for some tiny arrows. The upgrades for the V1 are a bit quirky. I heard the last upgrade to get POP capability required some owners to send in the V1 + $100-$200 for the hardware upgrade versus a simple reflash.
Along with the POP update you also got the newest firware revision.
Spending a $100 for an update is much better than spending $300 for a new unit every so often.
If your unit is newer than 1 year all upgrades are free.
You can get the firmware updates for free without having to do an upgrade if you do not want a certain upgrade such as POP.
POP can NOT be used in court but that is not saying a police officer will not try to use it to give you a ticket.
The RX 65 and Bel 8500 X50 are both excellent radar detectors but they can not match Valentine's range and performance.
I shold know, I own all 3 of them plus a few others and I test them and time and time again the Valentine 1 always comes out on top.
A few tricks to help the suction cups stick better is to put a small amount of vaseline on the suction cups then stick them to the window.
Another thing to help them is to boil them in water for a few minutes that will make them soft and pliable where you can take some of the flatnesss out of the suction cups.
Never put spit/saliva on the suctions cups this actually will cause damage to the suction cups when they are in the window and heat gets to them.
Where ever you decide to mount your radar detector make sure it is mounted level.
I see so many hanging that are either pointed to the sky or facing down toward the road.
The problem buying radar detectors from a non authorized dealer is if there is any warranty issues the manufacture will not honor the warranty.
An authorized Bel, Escort or Whistler dealer is not allowed to sell them on Ebay.
If they are selling them on ebay they can not be auhorized dealers.
Many of the ones being sold on ebay are either refurbished or grey market items which are not meant to be sold here in the U.S.
The link that a lot of others have posted is a good place to buy from.
The owner's name is Roy and he is a retired cop and he also runs a radar detector forum as well. I am a member and a moderator at that site.
I am not here to say that you should buy your detector from him but where ever you buy it from make sure they are truly authorized dealer for your own protection.

Hey boomerman! I read Roy's webpages and it looks like the V1 has poor filtering capabilities and even got voted the Chicken Little of detectors in 2004. Roy's latest tests show that the 8500 x50 still edges out the RX65 and V1. How old are the other units you have?
I'll try boiling the cups and using vaseline. Thanks!
