Yesterday it rained, while I was at work, unexpected being as I was in Phoenix. I'm second owner and first owner (@$$4073) decided to put rally stripes on my baby. Well the good old acid/salt rain ate the clear coat off the rally's in certain spots. Is there a way to take these very cheaply created rally stripes off and bring her back to her original perfection? Any ideas will help.

From what I have just learned from a friend (needed to remove factory stripes from his '84 Monte Carlo SS) the process of removal can be very difficult as it involves using heat. If too much heat is used it can cause serious problems. A professional is needed in most instances unless you or an experienced friend want to give it a whirl.
Just for your info, my friend was quoted $200 to remove the striping (rather thin stripes overall, not wide) from both sides, the front bumper and back bumper. That doesn't seem outrageous to have the job done right. It's all labor.

eww... for what its worth, when I had the body off our 65 galaxie, I had the doors stored at a brother-in-laws garage...he spraybombed something right by the doors and got overspray all over the doors. buddy at work said 'enamel reducer' wont melt factory baked paint, figured I was looking at a repaint anyways- so tried it...stripped the wax/shine off but didnt hurt the old paint, it polished right back up. just used enamel reducer on microfiber towels, rotating often as paint clogs the cloth.

might suggest another option- take to a bodyshop, have them wetsand/shoot new /wider stripes over it in your color choice, and reclear everything- bet you could have it 'new looking' under new stripes and urethane clear for 500~1000 bucks, and prolong the life of the OEM paint for another decade or more...just be sure they use a high quality clear urethane, like PPG concept or such (400 bucks a gallon- but only little as 2 quarts needed to clear the car)

Where are you located? Stockton, CA? It's kind of a drive, but there's a really good place here in the San Diego area called Flawless Designs. Aaron (the owner) is a really nice guy and really likes Mustangs. He striped my first Mustang and did an amazing job. I'm sure he could help, but you could probably find a place closer to where you live as well.

 

What did you pay to have your stripes stripped?
