The Cobra name on cars STARTED with Carroll Shelby's AC Cobras the 260 / 289 / 427 /428. the snake appeared on all 1965 - 1970 Shelby Mustangs on gas caps, side fender badges etc... After Shelby left Ford - Ford had the legal rights to the Cobra name... Which was a very strong tie-in to Shelby and Ford ran with it using it on just about everything from 428 Cobra jet etc to the mid 70's Mustang Cobra ( remember Charlies Angels) to the 1978 Mustang King Cobra 302 V8 ( I had one of those what a joke engine that was)... to other decal package like the 1980 Mustang Cobra (really under powered 255 cid V8 - 119 horsepower) etc etc etc .... I think the first noteworthy SVT Mustang Cobra was in 1993 with 235 horse power with a run of just under 5000 units - from their on progressively the car and the name Cobra start to again stand for something in the Mustang world I think the word is - Performance.... And now the snake has returned to it's master Carroll Shelby in the rebirth of the Shelby Mustang GT500 ( and I hope a GT350 soon to follow)... Carroll is the man... He has the right to the Cobra name with Ford's blessing because they know as do we all know - what this man touches automotive wise turns to gold - period... So after 5 years or so ( guess on my part - I hope longer) when Ford & Shelby are done making Shelby Mustangs... you cobra guys can have the Mustang Cobra name back...
Please understand where I'm coming from - a few of us Shelby Mustang guys have waited a long time for Shelby & Ford to get back together again... I last owned a GT500 in 1989 which I sold to buy my house... And if it means that SVT mothballs the Mustang Cobra name for a few years so Carroll can have his last shining moment in the world of the Ford Mustang - then try and be understanding - he's waited along time for this moment too...
Enjoy the moment - alot of high performance Mustangs in the pipe line... Shelby is doing soooo many good things for the Ford Mustang name right now - renewing interest in old fans of the car as well as first timers..... The excitement is building with every new anoucement of a new model or possible new model - California Special, GT500, Shelby GT -H, Shelby GT, 2008 Bullitt, a possible Boss 302, maybe another Mach 1, or the one I'm praying for the GT350 with the 2004 cobra motor.... Keep your fingers crossed it last a few years.... Randy Anderson
