Accidentally shifted to Reverse at 80 MPH

I have this habit of shifting into neutral(I have automatic) after going somewhat fast and I have some room to just let momentum carry me forward.

I had a friend pull a Reverse-180°-Drive with a car that had an automatic transmission. As soon as it engaged he dropped the transmission. Permenant neutral.
Don't shift into N to coast, leave it in D. To save your brakes, at lower speeds, you can shift into 3-2-1 to slow yourself further.

I thought I heard somewhere that cars nowadays won't let you neutral drop, something to with computer shutting down power so you don't kill tranny.

OK, guys. I have tried, just to see & you CANNOT shift from Drive to Neutral WITHOUT pressing the button.
My mom's Escort you could & in my grandpas contour you can. But NOT the stang. You CAN shift from Reverse to Drive without pressing the button. I do this ALL the time.
Now: WHY?????? Why in the world do you shift from Drive to neutral while the car is in motion? I don't get that.
As others have stated. Get it checked out ASAP. Better safe than sorry. And just break the habbit. It's a nasty little habbit that could have serious consequences for you or someone else.

That's 100% correct, you CANNOT shift from D to N without pressing the button in this car!
It was possible for me in my '04 Volvo S60 with the Geartronic automatic tranny, but not in the Mustang.
Like everyone else said: DON'T DO IT ANYMORE! There's absolutely no reason to!

On Ford's Auto's you have always had to push the button to shift out of Drive. On others like GM's (I have two) you do not have the lock in Drive position and I find it a pain because I like to rest my hand on the shifter handle a lot. And many times during hard braking the shifter will easly go into nutral. I dislike that.
On the orginal question. I wouldn't be to concerned about going into reverse position one time like you did. I believe the clicking noise you heard was a preventive measure built in.
I do agree with everyone else, Stop doing that, it makes no sense for many years now. The roll is built in to auto trans vehicles.

Holy cow!! I can't believe you even tried to do that in an automatic. I used to do that with an older car I had during school. It was a manual though. It was a stupid concept to think I was saving gas money. I don't think it actually works.

I'm still trying to figure out why you are shifting into neutral???? and I thought in order to go into reverse you had to press the button in on the side of the shifter. I'd say stop doing that before you really damage something. I'd be surprised if you didn't damage the tranny in anyway.

I had a drunken friend to that to one of my beaters oh so long ago... you probably saved the transmission in time. That car is still running strong, 60,000miles later. No need to stress.

Actually, this practice of placing the car in neutral while in motion would not save any brake lining it all. It would add brake wear, since there would be no engine braking involved as the car slowed while not in gear.
I must agree this is a habit with no value, and there's a lot of reasons to dispose of it. I hope your car is undamaged, and am glad you are also undamaged!

My '88 GT was an auto.... AODE... I used to shift that manually all the time. I can't remember what I did, and why because I haven't owned that car for over 8 years, but I dropped into reverse at about 40mph... not just in and back out real quick, I mean dropped in and there it stayed. There is a safety mechanism..... it killed the motor and the tranny went to neutral. no harm done. the engineers have to asssume that EVERYONE is an idiot... not just me... so they are designed to failover to neutral and kill the motor.... you can throw the selector back into neutral and turn the key over while you're still rolling .... probably at about 65mph for you by that point.. but I wouldn't sweat it. Just listen to you tranny, and if you have anything funny going on during the rest of your warranty, take it in and forget to mention that you did that.

Constantly shifting into neutral will driving = bye bye valve body
For anyone that had a 87-93 5.0 auto, you all know the way to manually shift the gears. Well, that is one of the best ways to eat up the valve body and later your tranny.
Here's some advice....DON'T DO THAT ANYMORE.

I wasn't going into neutral to save brakes, just to kind of coast from momentum carrying me forward just for fun. It doesn't matter, I will stop shifting into neutral. I didn't do it that often anyway. Oh, I did try to reverse and it's fine. Honestly I don't even think there was any damage because I shifted back so quickly. I just made this post to see if there was any serious consequences.

Not to much experience driving the new stangs, just about 1700 miles I put on the rental. But my point is these things coast forever in drive!
*note, dont put in neutral with the cruise on. Not sure how the stang reacts to this, but tried in my tbird and just watch the tach go up up up! POOF!
no, i didnt poof my engine, lol just saying what could happen.

yeah, anyone that owns a fox body with a auto.... that's not a C-3, knows that they are craptastic anyways. I drove the urine out of mine and it was on it's way out the door when I sold it. I told the kid that when he bought it, and he didn't care... he was converting to a T-5. yeah... they were junk, and the I wouldn't care to even have another anyways. I'd be curious to see how these new 5 speeds hold up. If I was going to go with an auto again.... I drive too hard for the stock ones, and I'd go back to a built C-6.. good times, though. I'm all about the manual these days..... somethin' about rowing trough the gears that does it for me.
