I have this habit of shifting into neutral(I have automatic) after going somewhat fast and I have some room to just let momentum carry me forward. Well tonight while doing 80 I shifted too far and went into Reverse for about a second. It was enough for me to hear the tires squealing at the sudden change of direction, but since I had my hand still on the shifter I immediately put it right. Is there any chance I might have damaged my transmission?

That is very dangerous for you, others around you and your mustang. My suggestion would be to stop.

Umm....

1) Take it to the dealer and say you heard a funny noise...

2) STOP DOING THAT!

That's a nasty habit that could get you killed. Chill with that and take it to the dealer.

If anything, he just burned he heck out of his clutch right? No way it would engage at that speed. Or would it?

Hmm... don't really understand why you would shift into neutral at speed, but whatever floats your boat I guess.

But what I really don't understand is if you're going to shift into N from D, why in the heck would you push the button in first? You can just nudge the lever up and it will go from D to N and stop there. You have to actually push the button in to get it in R.

Anyway... hope the tranny is ok. Did you check the road behind you to make sure it wasn't lying in the middle of it?

No, it wouldnt engage but I wouldnt be surprised if you didnt; damage/burned your clutch out. :bang: Get it checked ASAP. and like someone posted earlier.

STOP.....DOING......THAT! :notnice:
No need to shift fast if yer not used to it. start slow. Once it becomes second nature, shift as fast as you want.
Good luck.

He has an Auto, not sure if theres a lock on those. Most every manual won't let you get to reverse from 5th.

Have you checked to see if the car still works in reverse? Your lucky if you didn't blow the transmission and you are even luckier you didn't get hurled into the windsheild or rear ended.

Sorry, but you cannot go into reverse from any forward gear while in motion. Button pressed in or not, the transmission will not do it.

If this is true, then stop doing that, there's no reason for it. Tires squealing? I don't think so. Maybe that was something else you heard, like the tranny telling you :nono:

If you're dropping into neutral to save your brakes, STOP doing that! It doesn't save you much on the brakes. And brakes are cheaper than trannies! Also when you shift from drive to neutral, don't press the button to shift. You don't need to. It will allow you to shift to neutral and prevent you from shifting to reverse. Try it when you're idling. Idle down the street, then push the lever to neutral without hitting the button on the shifter. You'll see you can do it without pushing in the button. Now brake to a stop and now without pushing in the button, try pushing it to reverse. You'll see that you have to push in the button to shift to reverse.

The best practice is, don't shift into neutral when driving! You don't have a manual car! Use the automatic the way it's meant to work! Replacing your transmission will cost thousands. Replacing break pads are less than $100. Even changing your rotors is less than $1000.

Well, I guess he could have damaged his clutch...if he had one.
