5r55s transmission 90k mile service
5r55s transmission 90k mile service
So my 2005 Mustang v6 Auto has finally done 90k miles and I need to do the required transmission service.
The workshop manual says
I have called a dozen dealers and transmission 'specialists', almost everyone telling me a different story with a different price.
Only one dealer said, "Just change the oil - if you do anything else you will have problems - we never change the filter."
All the others want to take the pan off and change filter, gasket and everything costing close to $600 - I live in Los Angeles.
And can anyone recommend a good dealer or transmission shop in LA?
The workshop manual says
- Change automatic transmission/transaxle fluid on all vehicles equipped with TorqShift transmissions. Install a new remote filter element on vehicles equipped with the TorqShift transmission. Inspect automatic transmission fluid level on all other vehicles (if equipped with an underhood fluid level indicator). If equipped, change the in-line service-installed transmission fluid filter.

Torqshift is in a Diesel Truck!
Here is What the FORD Shop Manual Says!

All engines 11.2L (11.9 quarts) Fluid Filter In-Line Transmission Fluid Filter Kit 7B155 — In-Line Transmission Fluid Filter 7B155 —

We Did a Lot of BG Trans Services at The Ford Dealers I Have Worked At. Check Out the Service Here and Also They Have a Shop Locator! Check it Out! I have Personally Used The BG Products & Had Good Results!

Thank you so much @05stangkc! I'm a long-time lurker and first-time poster.
I see that now in the Automatic Transaxle/Transmission Specifications section 307-01-1
I suppose the Maintenance Schedule - Gasoline Engines 100-03-6 section applies to all Ford cars. Very confusing.
If the Torqflite is only found in trucks, why do they even list it in the Mustang Service Manual?
Anyway, the gearbox changes smoothly so I'll leave it until I have problems.
BTW. How do they define Heavy Use? Towing or high-temp operation or something?
But it goes to show you that out of the twelve people I called only one, a dealer, said just change the oil if you feel you ought to. The rest all wanted to make bucks.
Understandable, but it only furthers the proposition that most automotive repairers are dishonest.
I appreciate your advice - you just saved me $600 - I owe you a coffee at least!

Trans Fluid Once Burnt is a No Win Scenario! So Towing, Drifting For Those So Inclined Could Overheat Fluid etc. I Hate the Fact The Trans Has No Dipstick! A quick Visual Inspection of Level and A Sniff to See if its Burnt is a Feature It Should Have. At One Point They Had Aftermarket Kits to Add One. I Don't Think They are Still Making them But I Did Not Do An Exhaustive Search.
When it Comes to Trans Service Advice Yes it is All Over the Place. My Opinion is Formed From My Own Experience With My Cars and Being in the Picture with Dealership Parts. It has a Lot to Do With How the Vehicle Has Been Treated over it's Lifetime as to Best Course of Action on Fluid and or Filter Replacement and or not!
