$500 Deposit for dealer to place order
#1
When you put a deposit on a Mustang order, is that deposit refundable if you find a better deal with another dealership? or if a situation comes up where you can't afford the Mustang for awhile?
The dealership I was working with in California, said that he has to give the deposit back if I change my mind. So when I found a better deal from a dealership in Minnesota, I had no problem placing my order there.
The dealership in Minnesota that I have now placed my order with said that the $500 deposit that I had to put down is not refundable if I change my mind. Does he bank $500 if I decide not to buy the car he ordered?
What are the laws regarding deposits on vehicle orders at dealerships? Do they vary state to state?
On a side note, I have no intentions of canceling my order from the MN dealer. I am just curious for the "what if" situation.

Look for a dealer that only takes the money as a hold.
You should never give a dealer a non refundable 500-dollar deposit.
There are others that do not request this.
Keep in mind they will sell the car... if not to you... to someone else.
For my 05 GT, my dealer wanted a refundable 500-dollar deposit... even if I don't buy it from them I get the money back.
I gave it to him.
Good Luck.

I would imagine the dealer is saying "non-refundable" because you are having him ship his car to California for you to buy. He doesn't want you backing out and sticking him with the expense of getting his car back.

My dealer took a $200 deposit that is refundable.
He told me the only way the deposits are non refundable is if you order something special that they can't sell easily as stock.
