too big and too heavy?

has anyone considered the added length and weight of the new mustang? i like my sports (or sporty) cars to be smaller and nimble. the new mustang, according to edmunds and some other magazine sources is around 6 inches longer, and 3400 lbs, thats about 200 lbs more than the 04 gt's. do you think the v6 would still feel peppy given its lofty weight? the power boost isnt all that much over the last year, and the last model was almost 300 lbs lighter. im considering getting an '05 v6, which brings me to my second question...

i love the '05 mustang, i like that its on a more modern platform, it has much better ergonomics, styling is greatly improved and all... but i can only afford a v6.
ive also been looking at the bullitt gt from 2000. ive found a few in my area going for 14k and up, which is a really good deal to me for a v8. so im torn... new 05 stang with a v6... or outdated stang with v8...? anyone wanna help me out? i know alot about mustangs, but ive never driven one, v6 or v8, so any help or comparisons would really be appreciated.

Might help to read some of the reviews posted in other topics on this site. They seem pretty excited about the V6 in both the USA Today and Canadian articles.

Not that it needs to necessarily be an issue, but you'll also get a new car warranty with the new one too...

The weight difference is only 100 lbs at best. The '04 GT weighed about 3350 lbs, while the '05 GT weighs about 3450 lbs.

The '04 GT is 183" long, while the '05 GT is 187" long. However, the '04 GT only had a 101.3" wheelbase, while the '05 GT has a 107.1" wheelbase. Longer wheelbase = better handling.

We already know that the '05 GT is capable of sub-5 second 0-60 times, and 13.5 second 1/4 mile times. Both stats are nearly a full second faster than the '04 GT.

The Mustang does not fit in the "small" niche of cars. If you're looking for small and nimble, go for an RSX. If you want midsize, fast, and handles great, go for the Mustang. :yes:

I don't know if "nimble" is gonna be a word that comes to your mind if you buy the stang. I'd suggest the WRX-sti, but that's more expensive than you want.

Wait and drive the v6 and judge for yourself.

i understand your dilema but i'd rather hear the purr of the v8 over the fart of a v6 anyday.I'd get the not so outdated bullitt.

Yes it is too big and heavy....It's now a muscle car..still a great car, but not what it should be.

Again though It's a great car, and you just can't create the perfect car...

Holdon, and I'll explain in detail what I mean.

The lenght and weight will give the car a much needed firmer stance in my opinion. [better ride] My wife's 04 has just a little to much body roll !

For a v6, I think you will find that it works nice, power wise.

As for the v8 old outdated stang versus the 05. The 05 v6 would be the way to go, in my opinion, if you can come close to affording it. You would have a new set of wheels right from the get-go!. If you look after it , the car would give you good trade in value down the road on another stang!

Not saying there's anything wrong with the outdated stang though! They are like fine wine.
The older they get, the better they are!

The chassis is much stiffer on the new car as well.

Factor in the weight that would be added to a 94-04 when you add subframe connectors and braces to get the stiffness that a stock '05 has and the weight difference gap closes.

By the way, the '05 is only 40lbs heavier than the mach 1.

What is with all these n00bs bashing the V6?

The V6 is a GREAT car, I drive a Manual V6 Mustang from 1999 right now and it is a WONDERFUL car. With a manual it is one of the most fun cars I have been in. And the new one won't fart, it is 4.0 L and it will sound good, especially with dual exhausts.




Maybe you should think before posting something like that.

My understanding is a longer wheelbase makes the car more stable, but less willing to rotate. That's great for high speed handling, but can in fact make the car less responsive on sharper, low speed corners. The Lotus Elise or the Mazda Miata have relatively short wheelbases and handle very well in those kinds of situations.

A longer wheelbase within a a same size car can greatly increase interior room. I believe this was likely the main motivation behind the wheelbase increase on the Stang.

However, the 2005 model has much improved weight distribution and suspension geometry and should easily outhandle the previous model. Motor Trend got 66 mph in their slalom for the GT, faster than any other Mustang tested outside of the Cobra R.

You sound like you are concerned about handleing a lot more than speed. If this is true then the mustang probably isn't for you. Maybe something like a new mazdaspeed miata would fit you better?

I had basically the same decision to make a couple of months back between an 05' GT, 01 Bullit and and 02 Steeda. After finding this site and seeing all the pictures of the 05, the choice was simple.

According to Edmunds, the weights are:

2004 GT - 3347lbs
2004 Mach 1 - 3469lbs (listed due to '05 GT having similar performance)
2004 GT - 3450lbs

I'm not sure where you're getting 200lbs from this source. As for the length, I think that's a good thing. The longer wheelbase makes for better handling.

If expense is a concern you should first get a quote for insurance. You may find that the newer v6 is less costly than the V8 bullit. All things being equal, I would probably go with the BULLIT (keep it close to stock). Then once you've paid it off you will be in a better position to trade in for a 2006-2007 GT.
