5 speed manual vs automatic
another aspect to getting a manual over an auto that i don't think has been discussed yet on this thread and that's the ergonomics of the car:
the relationship of the pedals, steering wheel, shifter and seat...all very critical for having a rewarding experience driving a stick. in many cars, expecially if you're tall, the distance between the bottom of the steering wheel and your thighs is so small that lifting your leg on and off the clutch can be really tiresome.
in fact, the ergonomics for a manual are just as important as the clutch engagement and the linkage feel...i'm 6'4'' so these things will be critical to me whether or not i get a new stang. jackg 90seville 94k

I'm going with the automatic... mainly because my wife has to drive the car from time to time, and she can't/won't drive a stick.

You're so nice. Keep that up and you might be sleeping in your car.Seriously, she can learn. If she doesn't want to learn, then she doesn't REALLY want to drive it. Where there's a will, there's a way.
Mine can drive one. Mine wants to drive one. Mine loves to drive one.
She's as excited as I am about driving the Mustang. And since I'm the one who's never owned a manual before, she'll be test driving it.

I won't/don't mind telling people. Most people are surprised when they find out she knows how to handle the stick... *pun intended*

LoL I see.
My friend is teaching me on his 84 Mustang soon. He has a kinda bad clutch, so he said it would be ok if I mess it up even more. Plus he has a new one sitting in his room, waiting to be put in.

She doesn't want to learn. Besides, she is not a good driver. This way, if I get a standard, she can never drive it so I don't need to worry about her rear-ending someone or slamming into a curb B)
Every time I answer this question (I think this is number four) I feel worse. Since the last time I said automatic (because of heavy So Cal traffic) I've damaged my left knee and on Tuesday I start a third job. For this one I will have to battle rush hour at the very worst time and on the worst freeway in the area.
So it's still auto and please stop asking this because I don't want to see what will go wrong with my life next!

You obviously need more practice using your knees to keep the wheel steady while you shift with your right hand.....left hand can stay on windshield.

done that lots of times
Well I have decided to stick with the standard. I realize the performance of the automatic will be pretty close to the standard, but I still prefer to manual shift and just love the sound of the car as it goes through the gears.
