The bold, brawny styling of Ford's Mustang GT isn't the only attention-grabber when it comes to America's beloved pony car. Its engine is making others sit up and take notice as well.

The 4.6-liter 3-valve V-8 that powers the Mustang GT has been named a "10 Best Engine" for 2005 by Ward's Auto World. Ward's testers praised Ford for creating a refined V-8 that produces 300 hp at an affordable price and called it "the perfect new-generation muscle-car V-8."

"The award-winning Mustang GT coupled with an award-winning 4.6-liter V-8 is a powerful combination," said Dave Szczupak, vice president, Ford Motor Company, Powertrain Operations. "We are extremely pleased that Ward's recognizes the efforts of our world-class design and engineering capability. Our team has delivered without compromise."

The 4.6-liter engine delivers 40 more horsepower than the previous V-8. The lightweight, all-aluminum engine produces 315 foot-pounds of torque. It is 75 pounds lighter than a similar cast-iron design, yet it still provides optimum stiffness and strength. Meanwhile its 3-valve technology makes for a cleaner burn with improved fuel efficiency.

The 4.6-liter 3-valve V-8 is built at Ford's Essex Engine Plant in Windsor, Ontario, Canada, and at its Romeo Engine Plant in Romeo, Michigan.

Naw its got to many cams and valves to be a musclecar engine.

Although the 4.6 is a really nice engine what with 300 hp on 87 octane.

I hope they continue to refine and extract more power out of the 3v engine as time goes on.

According to my neighbour who works at the Essex engine plant, they no longer build the mustang 4.6. All production is now at Romeo.

I find this amusing because there was this GTO fan boy in Stangnet slamming Ford for being a second-rate engine manufacturer because the 4.6 "only" made 300HP as opposed to his beloved LS2 making 400. Is it me or is the LS2 not on Ward's list?

Before anyone jumps on me, I do respect the LS2 for the amount of power it puts out. I just wish GM would it put it in something that worth driving other than the C6.

First of all it's stangnet. Why would you waste your time?
Second I do like the LS2 engine and the C6. The GTO is to plain for my tastes but if you want to fly under the radar it's not bad I guess.

I find it amusing to go slumming every now and then. Brad's site towers above Stangnet, no doubt about it (which is why contributed to Brad and not to Stangnet! ). Stangnet is definitely troll central however. :notnice:

GM has done a lot with the LS2 granted, but it STILL has 70CID advantage. GM doesn't have anything below 300CID with this kind of power. They would argue that we don't have anything with their kind of power, but of course, the fat lady hasn't yet sung. Last I checked, the '03 Cobra motor was already darn close to taking out their beloved '05 LS2. Oh, and by the way, we're STILL down 70CID.
