Well... not exactly, I got this info from http://www.explore-cars.com
They claim production of the 4.0L cologne engine is sheduled to stop in 07 and the mustang will get a "300HP" duratec 35 instead. I know this is probably speculation on their part, still it makes you wonder...
Would you buy a 300Hp V6 Mustang ?

Would Ford sell a 300hp V6? I'll bet the farm they wouldn't.

I remember somewhere in this forum, Steve, I believe, from his source, stated that in '07 or '08 the stang would likely get a horsepower increase in both the V6 and V8 of something like 10-20% in rwhp. Also remember something about increased MPG by 20%.
Don't quote me on the numbers, especially the MPG, but I do believe its in the Rumor section somewhere.
Steve's source seems to have been largely correct with the info provided on the GT500... as a matter of fact the only thing I think he got wrong was stating that the red and white striped GT500 was in existence but wouldn't be at the New York show.

That depends on the following factors:
1) What fuel grade the motor is tuned for. Nissan's 3.5L VQ can pump out 300hp on 91 Octane fuel, with 260 lb/ft of torque. If Ford engineers do an exceptional job on the Duratech 35, 300hp shouldn't be difficult at all.
2) Ford can switch their V8 to DOHC with VVT on each cam. Adding Variable Valve Lift, which I'm confident Ford engineers can do, can boost the power even further. So, with all these enhancements, it wouldn't be too far-fetched to see Ford's 4.6L intrude into LS-1 or 5.7L HEMI territory...
3) 250hp V6's are commonplace now. This was V8 territory just a few years ago. I think Ford realizes that the Japanese are turning up the heat on the horsepower race, especially where smaller engines are concerned. I'm pretty sure they feel pressured to meet or exceed the numbers pumped out by Nissan, Acura, and Lexus...

Maybe in something from SVT (like the Fusion) but not in a base V6 Mustang. They're more likely to offer something in the 230-250HP range.

The question isn't whether thay can technically do it (I stated that by saying it might show up in an SVT offering). The question is would they sell it in a V6 Mustang when they already have a V8 powered model. From a marketing perspective, there's no need for a high-horsepower V6 with a V8 in the line-up.

I'm sure they can technically do it, but that amount of power does not coincide with the niche market of the V6. Insurance rates will go up significantly, putting them out of their niche market.
You won't see a 300hp V6 even if the GT receives a power bump IMO.
230-240hp would be upper limits IMO.

Of course they could get 300 out of it, but if that engine shows up in the mustang, it will be tuned more for economy than power, expect 250hp more or less wich is more than the GTs produced not long ago.
I believe the 3.0L duratec would be more appropriate for the base mustang, it would have enough power, similar to the actual 4.0L engine and better fuel economy. It seems questionable to detune this futur 3.5L V6 so it does not trespass on GT territory, why not just use something that "fits"?

The other thing to consider is that these Japanese V6 require Premium fuel in them and with the way Gas prices are going up I could see people recoiling from buying cars that use Preium since its a .20 mark up over regular gas. a 3.5L 275 HP V6 on regular would be great for the base mustang.

Nice engine you have there Rob.
Yeah the DOHC 3.5L six would be a great match for the stang. Be cool if they slotted it between the 4.0L and 4.6L mills.
Hp? 250 probably.

That is very true, but...
... powertrains tuned for 91 octane fuel tend to get better gas mileage and more top-end power. Smoother piston stroke. Gotta love it.
In other words, that extra 20 cents per gallon can very well be negated by better fuel economy.
Just my $0.02

The 4.0L Cologne pumps out a whopping 240 lb/ft of torque. Compare that to the Duratech 30's measly 197 lb/ft.
If Ford replaces the old 4.0, it had BETTER be the Duratech 35. The fact that I can get a Toyota Avalon with a V6 that pumps out 70 more horsepower than a base Mustang is just... well... troubling...

The duratec 3.0 has about the same HP, it's lighter, smoother, more fuel efficient than the cologne 4.0, and could be as fast, or very close. The base Mustang is NOT about power or acceleration time for most people who buy it, most just want an economical sport coupe and could not care less about HP figures. The GT, that's another story...
