23.7 mpg road trip in 2007 Mustang Gt Vert
I got 23.7 mpg on our recent road trip from Chico to Merced, Ca. and back in our 2007 GT convertible. 438 miles round trip. Most of the miles were highway miles but I probably put on about 20 miles around town.
I drove mostly Route 99 and some Interstate 5 (because my Garmin Nuvi 350 GPS girl told me to when driving south of Sacramento toward Merced, then I cut back to Route 99 on highway 4). I racked up a lot of miles going 70 to 80 miles per hour. A few times a little over 80 when in the middle of a pack making time. I thought about driving slower to conserve gas, but driving in the right lane is a pain in the neck with the on and off ramp traffic and the sometimes rougher road surface. When I only have the choice between two lanes, I prefer the left lane on these two highways.
With regular gas being over $4.00 here in California, I thought maybe the traffic would be lighter. Folks trying to save money by not traveling. Nope. Lots of cars and trucks on the road haulin' a$$ right along with me. For you guys not familiar with these highways, it's often too crowded to only use the left lane for passing. You get into a line of other cars and maintain their speed.
BTW, my Garmin GPS worked great getting me to a difficult to find address in Merced.
So what gas mileage are you guys getting on long trips? Are you slowing down to conserve fuel? Is it worth the hassle of driving in that crappy right lane?
I'm still thrilled with the way our Mustang drives. It was really comfortable for me and my wife.
I'm looking forward to our drive to Montana this summer.
Happy trails to the rest of you guys.

depends on the speed
I see about 26 mpg at 60 mph, and about 24 mpg at 70 mph. I averaged 24.7 on a 340 mile trip from CT to Watkins Glen NY last August to see the NASCAR race - just about that whole trip was between 60 and 70 mph.
Haven't been on a 'long' trip yet, but in my normal mixed driving I'm avg. right around 22mpg. Well, I was till this past week... 100+ temps and A/C on the whole time. I think I'm below 19mpg now.
I get 28mpg+ at 60mph (calculated both by onboard computer and by the old reliable calculator method). And yes, that is 28mpg WITH cams. Modified 93 Bama race tune!

Many of you guys are getting better gas mileage than me. Thanks for your replies.
I recently (in May) made a 1600 mile round trip in my '05 GT Vert. The highest MPG I got was 26.5 doing a steady 70-75 MPH. My mpgs have increased the more miles I put on the car... which is how it is supposed to be. I have also noted that the MPG does not vary by more than 1 MPG with the top up, top down, a/c on, or a/c off. Go figure.
My last trip from Virginia Beach, VA to Cleveland, OH (600ish miles) I netted a 26.7 mpg. There was some spirited driving going on and quite a bit of hill climbing in Pensylvania and Maryland. I was happy with it. I try so hard to baby it on road trips but I give in every now and again. Gotta have some fun and pass time...right??
My average MPH was 73 something I beleive.

18.6 MPG average since I bought the car, July 05.
This is driving to enjoy the Car, (Spirited!), 70 mph - hi way Travel.
These Cars react Hugely to;
Wind, with or Against
Going up or down Hills etc.
Speed, 2k revs seems best mileage
Acceleration, even starting slowly burn lots Gas This is the One I enjoy the Most
Operating Temp, Cold is using bunches of Fuel.
Load in the Car
The price of gas here is now around $5.00 an American Gallon.
Your mileage for a trip seems like a Good average.
30 plus mpg is going Down Hill with a Tail Wind and checking the Trip Computer for 10 Seconds.

I like the color of your vert!
My GT coupe does great on open highway. I generally get about 30mpg. 35 if I pay attention.
Arrow: How fast do you drive and what is your GT Coupe configuration (3.31s or 3.55s, 17" or 18" tires)? Seeing how I get only 22-23 MPG in mixed driving, I would not expect more than 25-27 MPG on the open highway at 70 MPH (the speed limit on most freeways here is 70 MPH).
