Improve fuel economy by a third?
For your customers, particularly SUV buyers, concerned about fuel economy:
CNN Money yesterday reported that they could get 35 percent better fuel mileage by altering their driving styles. The basis of the report was a recent real-world test by Edmunds.com using a Ford Mustang and Land Rover LR3. The summary: Lose the lead foot and break easy (biggest mpg gainer), use cruise control on the highway. For the complete tips, go to http://www.edmunds.com/ownership/driving/articles/106842/article.html.

I think they went overboard with their correcting the fuel economy numbers. I do not gingerly drive my GT and I see combined city and highway mileage equaling their highway mileage. I ran some tests to and from work and found that I get 30.5 mpg at a constant 55MPH, 29.5 at 60 MPH and 26.4 at 70MPH. I've repeated these tests several times to rule out weather conditions.

Informative! I average 21-22 in combined city/hwy driving with a daily commute up and over the mountains on the H-3 to Pearl Harbor.

They corrected them to the way people were driving 2 years ago.
Already more and more people are driving closer to the speed limit and not flooring it from a stop.
It was always intended to be a comparison though.
If you are comparing new car to new car, the numbers will tell you an exact comparison.
Your mileage may vary.

When I have the chance, I'm going to try driving the speed limit on the highway. I wasn't aware that it made the big of a difference.

well, the faster you go, the more fuel you need, basically, on the highway

Some cars are WEIRD though! My sisters 96 T-bird (4.6L) gets better fuel economy at 90mph than it does at 75.

Don't ask me why.

Don't ask me how.

The silly thing gets about 31mpg at 90, but only 27mpg at 75. That's the ONLY car I have ever seen where you need to speed UP to save gas! All the other vehicles I have been involved with generally follow the laws of physics and get worse mpg the faster you go.

you could also put a giant nose cone on your mustang to reduce drag if you really wanted to save gas milage like this:

(sorry about the quality, its only a 10 minute photochop)

Just put an air splitter on it to cut down on lift

You know...that kind of reminds me of the original Mustang concept

And not that its particularly an original idea either. Dodge did it to the Charger to make a Daytona:
