2008 HID headlight

When the 08's come out, will we be able to order the parts for the HID lights and put them on 05-07's? If so that would be incredible.

I give it a 95% chance they are HID/Halogen low/high. Unless they do something that's a spinoff of the Saleen setup.

xenon is a term thrown around quite a lot. True xenon is HID lighting, but cheapie makers use the term to no end. The low beam will be HID, but the high beam will most likely be halogen, even BMW does not do bi-xenon lighting.

As one who was greatly disappointed that HID wasn't offered before, and intends to get them as soon as the budget allows, I wonder if there really is any need for HID high beam.

Why would you not need HID HB? Wouldn't HB situations be those where you most want improved lighting?

It's not a question of needing them - it's just a problem inherent with HID lighting - namely, it takes a minute or so for HIDs to fire up and put out the most light. When you are switching to highs, you need bright light NOW and not two or three minutes of waiting.

That's why the Saleen lights use a reflector to simulate a high beam - no need to start up the HID light when triggering high beams.

It will be interesting to see how the 2008 headlights look and function.

*sigh*

guess i won't be unique in a few months...

saleens are bi-xenon in that the high beams function by changing the cut off line to be higher and project further down the road, not a new bulb lighting up.

While that is an excellent point: start up time. I was driving at the fact that the high beams on the car are just fine. I'd think HID high beams are not only not necessary (depending on an individual's vision, I suppose) but they certainly would be irritating to oncoming drivers as well (if one was a little late lowering the beam).

The Saleens are not bi-xenon, they utilize one filament with an adjustable beam. The ones on say, stangmods that say 'bi-xenon' are two-element units, a dedicated high and a dedicated low-hence the 4 ballast units required for 2 bulbs.

You can get just as bright or even brighter with halogen bulbs on the high beams as there is no concern with glare on the high. My SVTF Euro package had HID low/halogen high made by Hella(they do all BMW/MB units). The brights were insane on that car and looked 10 times more powerful then the hid low beams. They used a sealed projector unit for the hids, most likely the standard unit they use in all applications. There are very few factory bi-xenon(hid) cars.

Look at the vid on stangmods on their bi-xen setup, they instantly light for high beams. With good bulbs and balasts they start instantly.

BMW has used bi-xenon since 2001 and yes the Saleens are bi-xenon but they do not use a projector. I have the Saleens on my 05 Mustang and the bi-xenons on my 04 BMW. I had a 2000 BMW 3-series that used the older xenon for lows and halogen for highs system but they changed to the bi-xenon in 01.

Definition of bi-xenon :

Bi-Xenon headlamps use a single xenon lamp to produce both the high beam and the low beam. The full light output is used to produce the high beam, while the low beam is formed by moving a shutter between the bulb and the lens, thus blocking off a portion of the light.

From Saleen site:
Up front are integrated turn signals along with available HID (High Intensity Discharge) headlights. Featuring unique Saleen-designed headlamp assemblies incorporating the industry's first bi-functional Xenon/HID lamp, these lights use moveable light shield technology to achieve both high and low beam functions in a single reflector with only one HID light source.
