I noticed that the 2008 GT's gas cap tether is shorter and tied to the center of the hinge on the fuel door, while the 2007 GT's tether is much longer and bolted to the base of the hinge/door area. I have found that the 2007 tether rubs against the hinge and sometimes gets jammed up because of its length/location.
The 2008 design appears to be much better, but there doesn't seem to be an easy way of adapting it to the 2007. Does anyone have any ideas?
What type of tether system does the Ford aluminum fuel door use? I know this isn't a big deal but it's something that irks me whenever I gas up since i have to make sure the tether isn't caught between the door or something.

On the subject of gascaps I hate how there's no place for the cap when it's off and it has to hang making contact with the body. My wife's camry has a small lip on the inside of the door and the cap will set on it holding it in place. It is one of the things I wish my mustang had

Yeah, I don't like the way the tether naturally orients the gas cap - gasoline-dripping-side rests on the side of my car. I've only filled up twice so far, but each time I dabbed the area dry with my shirt (would you rather have gasoline on your shirt or your paint job???
).
If someone made an aftermarket gas door that had a place to rest the cap, that looked stock on the outside, I would definately buy it.

What I have done with my 07 gas cap is pull it down and orient it so that it doesn't touch the car. Then I start filling up. However I haven't found an easy way of re-aligning the tether when I'm closing the door. The 2008 seems to solve this issue. I wouldn't mind springing for the $100 factory alloy cover if it was designed better.

I didn't want to give any of the kiddies funny ideas.
I never did it myself but it was very common back in the day.
