2006 V6 shifter button will not depress
Hello all, I'm new to the forum and hope you can help me out. I drive a 2006 V6 automatic. My shifter button will not depress to shift out of gear. This usually happens in the morning or after a few hours of being parked. The button will eventually depress, but it takes a few minutes. My foot is on the brake and I can hear the solenoid click. My brake lights light up fine. I have not removed the shifter **** yet. Any ideas of what I should be looking for when I do?

Brake-shift interlock
This vehicle is equipped with a brake-shift interlock feature that prevents
the gearshift lever from being moved from P (Park) when the ignition is
in the ON position unless the brake pedal is depressed.
If you cannot move the gearshift lever out of P (Park) with ignition in
the ON position and the brake pedal depressed:
1. Apply the parking brake, turn ignition key to LOCK, then remove the
key.
2. Using a flat head screwdriver, remove the plastic cover. (on the lower part of the shifter, to the right of the handle.)
3. Insert the ignition key and push it
straight down to release the
interlock.
4. Apply the parking brake, then shift to N (Neutral).
5. Start the vehicle.
If it is necessary to use the above procedure to move the gearshift lever,
it is possible that a fuse has blown or the vehicle’s brakelamps are not operating properly. Refer to Fuses and relays in the Roadside Emergencies chapter.

That happened to my sister's Mustang a long while back. We just let the dealer fix it, so I'm not sure what the actual problem was. But you can get around the interlock, as described above, in the mean time. But I would definately get it taken care of.

welcome to the forums. not sure as i never had any problems with mine. when it happens are you on any sort of incline? i use my ebrake always to keep stress off the drivetrain components.
if you can swing it, before spending a nickel on the oem shifter, get a tci shifter. its awesome. got mine from am. its not a bad diy job either
