2006 GT Rim width?
2006 GT Rim width?
Seems like a simple thing, but I can't find the answer.
What is the width of the factory 17" rims for the 2006 GT?
Any suggestions on a tire size upgrade, or just stick with the stock 235/55/17's?
Thx

They are 8" wide. I have a set of 17*8 charcoal bullitts that I use for the drag strip. 235/55/17 Pirellis up front and 275/40/17 BFG drag radials on the rear. The 275's are a little too wide for an 8" rim, but I don't go around corners on that set up, so it works fine at the track. 245's would be fine and 255's are pushing it for daily driver and corner carving, IMO.
Thx for the info. Anyone know what the back spacing of the factory rim is?
I'm looking at these, wonder how they'd look/fit?

Offset on the factory 17x8 wheels is 45mm. A lot of people have moved from the stock 235/55-17 size to a 255/50-17 on the stock wheels since it is the same diameter, just wider, but unfortunately there aren't a lot of tires available in that size, and they are mostly all-seasons. Worth a look though, I'll probably be switching to the 255/50's when my original Pirellis wear out.
Thx,
So if the factory rims are 45mm offset, and these aftermarket rims are only 25mm offset (and 1" wider), does that mean the rim will be push outward towards the fender?
Should I be looking for a rim with near factory offset?

Yes, wheels with a lower offset number will be pushed out towards the fender farther. 25mm will be closer to stock SN95 offset than S197, but may still work depending on how wide you go on the tires. FWIW the factoy 18x8.5" S197 wheels are 50mm offset.

Those wheel will not work at all,The bolt pattern is incorrect. (5X120)
Here's a set with the correct offset and bolt pattern.

Ok thanks for the heads up, I just searched another site and came up with this:
Style: GT500 Finish: Black Machined
Size: 18x9.5 Centercap Size: Large (2-1/2")
Back Spacing: 7.22" (183.4mm) Offset: +50mm (1.97")
Bolt Pattern: 5x4.5" (5x114.3mm) Fitment: 2005+ V6, GT,
Including Shelby GT500
I guess I'll have to search around. My problem is I want a rim that doesn't show a lot of the disc. I don't like it when you see a smallish disc rotor behind a larger rim.

I have stock rims on my 2006 Mustang GT, and reading the discussion above, clearly the factory size rims are 17x8, with that being said, I am looking at rims for my mustang that are titled "(17" x 7.5", +38 offset, 5x114.3 bolt pattern, 73.1mm hub)", my question followed, will those rims fit on my 2006 Mustang GT?
I am pretty sure the stock 17" wheels were 8" wide like already posted; but if you want to make sure, you should take one off and look at the back of it. Usually the size information is stamped there.
For buying new, wider wheels with the correct offset, the best and easiest thing to do is to buy them from someone who knows what they are doing, meaning knows the right specs for your car. As the wheel gets wider, to maintain the same outboard position of the tire, the offset must be increased by 1/2 of the increase in wheel width. You could do this math yourself, but all of the vendors who specialize in mustang aftermarket stuff . . . American Muscle for example . . . already have it figured out, and have sized their wheels so that they fill the wheel well nicely, but do not stick out.
If a reputable vendor like American Muscle or Tire Rack says they will fit your car, then that is probably correct. However, keep in mind that you don't want to put an overly wide tire on a narrow wheel; so going to a narrower wheel is usually not what we want.
