I raced a 03 stang...only mod was cold air induction. He kicked my 2005 Mustang GT Premium butt! I had him in first gear, but second gear hits redline way too soon!!!! I shift to 3, he is still in 2nd and long gone.................what the heck?!?

I've seen cars with a 100 horsepower disadvantage win in a street race. An 03 Mustang GT does not have a 100 horsepower disadvantage, and he probably knows how to drive his car to the limit, whereas you just got yours. Don't get too cocky with the 05, I've talked to a lot of 04 and earlier Mustang owners that are just itching to play with the new 05 GT's as they hit the roads, and they aren't playing fair...

He could have anything done. You can't be sure. It's pure impossibility for a 260hp stock '03 to win against a 300hp stock '05. Sounds like he probably had a little more going on than he was willing to admit.

my 01 with 3:73's, cold air, underdrive pullies, tune, throttle body, upper plenium, upper and lower control links, aluminum flywheel, etc is no match for an 05.

How could he still be in 2nd with you shifting to 3rd.

05 GT MTX 2nd gear 6000 RPM = 68.5 MPH
03 GT MTX 2nd gear 6000 RPM = 70 MPH

Sounds like you're afraid to use some RPMs, or he has some mods he didn't tell you about.

Just about anything is possible on the street. Maybe he had more mods than he said, buy maybe he was just the better driver.

Doesn't the engine need a few hundred miles to warm up and properly lubricate before it reaches is full potential?

Yeah, what the other guys says.

Don't be too afraid to go into the red, your pony can handle it. IIRC from lookin at the pics, it's redlined at 6,000 rpm? That's a conservative measure, I doubt you even get those 300 bhp at so low spins.

When I get to a certain point in the red, the computer kicks it down. Am I supposed to shift before it does this, or shift after/during it kicks it down?

I was shifting just before the computer kicked the RPM down.

Haven't driven the car yet, but if the car works like everyone is posting , sounds like more than cold air induction to me also!

Don't forget, you car is new. I'd allow for several hundred miles of break in, for the engine.

BTW, I'd shift well before redline.

Hmmm..... 03 GT with only CAI kill a bone stock 05 GT with underated 300+hp? Doesn't sound right. He might have a few more mods than you think or maybe its just you? I'd say push yours to the limit, but don't get too daring. Afterall, you just got it. I'd say demand a rematch. Sounds like his is modded way more. Was he someone you knew or just some random person you pulled up on at a light?

Why not try racing a Mach1 if you get the chance? I'd love to see how the 05 stacks up to it. Wow! First real street race with an 05 and it lost... ....sad!

I think for 1/4 mile the new 5 speed atx is going to be the tranny to have. I'm sure Ford or an after market company will have optional gears & shift kits shortly. my .02

My gut hunch is pretty much the same...I think you were just not ready to let her ponies out yet. Once you have it for a few months and get the feel of her I think you will have a better chance of letting her rip. My v-rod(motorcycle) was the same when I first got it...I just couldn't let her rip being fairly new and nearly got beat by a much slower bike.... Like they said, that's what the redline is for...It will stop you before you trash it.... Good luck on the next run and I'm sure you will have more.

Noone I knew. I saw a few stangs on the side of the road pimped out and stopped to check it out. The guy I raced had a stang that looked trashed, all dented and stuff. Sounds like he was a player.
