200 miles on a brand new car
#21
That's why i ordered my car, well one of the reasons. Took it off the lot with 6 miles on it. Never even test drove a new Mustang before I ordered it. Went in, did pre-lim paperwork, and then the salesman made me go out and take one for a spin to make sure I still wanted the order. I told him, "I don't need a test drive, but sure let's go." Like love at first sight, sometimes you just know.
A week after getting her with 6 miles on her, I went and drove her down to see my best friend in GA. Ended up putting over 1300 miles on her the first weekend I had her.

I told them when I ordered it that it had better not have any miles that were not absolutely neccessary (like assembly line to lot, lot to rail car, rail car to transport, etc.) or I wouldn't take delivery. I got it with 2 miles on it.... exactly as I ordered it. My biggest concern was that it wouldn't be broken in the way I wanted it broken in .... so when I signed the paperwork (never test drove it... or any other S197), I fired it up, waited for it to get to operating temperature, and I broke it in hard as hell. Didn't burn out, or hit the rev limiter, but I ran thru 80% of the RPM range at 80% throttle in the bottom 4 gears, then downshifted while braking pretty firmly, then ran it up again. Did that 3 times, then called it good.
The point of my story is..... if the people that put the first 200 miles on it were floggin' it.... it probably wasn't a very bad thing.... There are 2 schools of thought for breaking in new motors these days..... It just means that the more controvercial method was selected FOR you. Don't sweat it.... you have a warranty... if anything is going to go wrong because of it... it should manifest itself before 36K is up... you'll see white/blue smoke when you start it up, or lose compression, etc... If you don't see that or notice a decrease in power... then I wouldn't give it a second thought.

That's why I ordered mine to my specs. Didn't want a bunch of yahoos being in it first and "seeing what it could do". You're right, there's nothing you can do, you saw it when you bought it.

Mine had 300 miles on the clock, I figured if something was gonna break it would already have.
Besides, it's under warrantee. 11,000 miles later the only problem I’ve had is the little plastic **** on the seat back broke. Other than that the car’s been perfect.

I was pretty paranoid about who test drove my car before me, that's why I custom ordered. The car came with 5 miles on it! But for the most part, I don't think 200 miles of test drives would do too much harm though. Not everyone is going to flog it
Now that I think of it....

As for the 'new' method of a hard break in, I don't buy it. I work for an engine manufacturer and have spoken with design engineers there, along with some who work for other automotive companies that design and build engines. All recommend against it. I'm not going to bet against that knowledge.

Have you ever heard of "break in?" What does the owner's manual say about it?

Hey I have my Mobil 1 loaded in it and I'm at 600 miles now, If I wait for the slow as she goes method it may be a while before I can cut loose and I simply can't wait...................
I just want to have fun and live for the moment, the moment is now and I’m very OK with this way of car driving. After driving for 38 years the humble way this is so much more fun, should have used this method years, and years ago. ha
